Forums - Sales - The Nintendo DS really IS the highest selling console of all time

No matter what.. we can conclude that DS was selling very well..
We could also conclude that the DS is the fastest console to reach 150 mill ever..

Finally we also could conclude that making the dvd drive.. so bad.. (i had 2 ps2 and they both broke) and the "we remove ps2 backward compatibility" has done wonders for ps2..

But who cares about the past.. Now in 2012. sony are bankrupt. and nintendo are back.. stronger than ever..

It is not too hard to imagine that there are MANY PS2s on shelves in the entire world (millions even) , especially with all signs pointing to Sony ending production. They could easily have been shipping the last of the systems they had.

Who is John Galt?

3DS Friend Code : 2535-4338-9000

AMD FX 8150 , 8 GB DDR3 Kingston Memory,  EVGA GTX 560 TI 2 GB superclocked, Samsung 256 GB SSD

I really don't know how anyone can say that DS has passed PS2 when total shipments for PS2 are still bigger and for past two quarters PS2 has actually outshipped DS meaning that it's selling more on weekly basis. Vgchartz tracking is just completely off with PS2 and I can't blame them as big majority of its sales come from developing markets that are damn hard to track but at least chartz should admit it. There is zero chance that DS has passed PS2. Zero.

I can only speak for myself but in my country (Costa Rica) it's been years since I've seen a PS2 sitting on a shelve. I decided to bought a PS2 recently and I couldn't find it new, had to buy it used.

Again I can only speak for myself and my country, so I don't know how the PS2 is selling in other small countries, which are the ones Sony are trying to gather with the system (and one of the reasons why it's still selling). More people are buying a PS3 actually, Latin America in general is kinda like a Sony Land lol.

Sony themselves have stated just last year they've sold 153.6 million. People that honestly think Sony has somehow managed to push 3 or 4 million more of a 12 year old console since then make me laugh. They are most likely in the 155-156 million range total, putting it well within reach of the ds, which is 4 years younger. Sony will almost certainly cease production of their PS2 (if they haven't already) before Nintendo does the same with the DS..

What bothers me is that the few who are discrediting VGChartz are the very same ones who use this sites numbers on a daily bases for their arguments.

Well, if there are evident mistakes with the PS2 numbers, it has to be discussed. It's not discrediting. But the shipped numbers tell another story. VGC is a great site, but it can make mistakes. Some guys are intelligent enough to know when certain numbers are off. Others aren't and can only use VGC numbers.

Nothing wrong with saying this numbers are off and then use other numbers for arguments.

They may track PS2, but not accurately. They're probably off my a couple million.

The fact that we don't get weekly PS2 data is proof of that.

Why are some Sony fans so paranoid about the DS overtaking the PS2? We don't know if is true or not, but what's the problem if it is indeed true? Can someone explain me this, I just don't get it...

yea this is so true, It is what it is. Maybe it's a loss of bragging rights or maybe the ps2 in their eyes seems like the true king and offered the best experince for them and deserves the title as number 1.

but the DS probably is i guess the new king and i dont see anything wrong with it.

both great systems,  i dont understand a battle to be fought over it.

Think about when Microsoft announced 70M X360s sold, VGChartz was way off. Why would anyone assume that they're not off on this one? Their tracking just isn't spot on for any console.
