Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Can Stream MP4 Videos Directly From Your Computer

sounds ok, but I much rather be able to put the files on an external hdd and play them natively via the hardware and not stream.

Does wiiU have that? one thing I cannot test as I don't have external hdd.

You can't copy anything to the HDD, from PC, used with the U since it crestes a proprietary file system (or at least a heavily-encrypted one).

Can someone with a Wii U explain this feature? I understand how in theory it works, but how the heck does it actually work? I find it strange that this is through the browser instead of having an app.

aw crud, was interested til I read that MP4 was the only video type that worked, would have been a nice alternative to using my PS3's media server. Cool feature none the less, hopefully someone opens it up before too long.

...

**thinks about watching anime on the gamepad**... I must get a wiiU soon...

I like how this totally obscure and unexplained feature is actually a feature that may pull users in. Of course there's a whole "piracy" issue that I suppose could be involved with it, though.

problem is all my anime is mkv and ogm haha. dual audio.

I wonder if renaming the container of avis and mkv to mp4 may work and default to first audio stream. I know that kind of works with VLC player, but LVC is very versitile.

playing mkvs would be beyond awesome, but some of my older *beloved* anime is still mp4 and avi anyways...

about the bolded part... I dunno... maybe I would try to encode a few episodes to watch it on the gamepad. Ripbot is a fine solution for that.

What do i need to do on my PC to set it up?

I make sure to either get or convert all of my stuff in mp4, since it's the most versatile format to me (Apple user), so this is... nice.
