Compared to the PS360, how powerful do you consider the Wii U?

Because we already know it's at the very least 5 Wii's taped together based on rumored CPU specs alone? And if you count just the system RAM then it's 32X more and at least 64x more efficient? Yeap... look which games uses the Bullet... Rockstar and ? nothing more... it's not used. The Bullet Physics project is not new... I used it the first time in 2008 with the R600 (Radeon HD 2000) when it used Close To Metal for ATI GPU (before they translated to OpenCL).

I can't see others games using except GTA V.

Anyway the PhysX support is way better and the Havok is in almost every game you have played (over 200 titles).

PS. I know because that I uses "and" instead "or" the Bullet is wrote in OpenCL for AMD Radeon and CUDA for nVidia GeForce... if Wii U uses the Bullet then it is using both Bullet and OpenCL.

Theoretical and practical are different things.

We are currently in the theoretical wait and see stage of hope, soon to be mass denial followed by acceptance. There's a way to go yet.

...I read a poster when the Sega Saturn was released, it said it was 800 x more powerful than a Sega Megadrive/Genesis.



I think the Wii U is about 2.5x-3x more powerful than the PS360 when all thing are factored in. Despite the slower clock rate and architecture of the CPU, marcan states that it is not inferior to the PS360 in design; having both advantages and disadvantages. The system have for games just a little over 2x more RAM... Wii U have 1 GB shared between CPU and GPU plus the eDRAM... 360 have 480MB shared between CPU and GPU plus the eDRAM.

Tha other 1GB is for the system only.

I think the Open Dynamics Engine is on its way out, but Bullet Physics is still under active development and is entirely valid as a physics engine today.

First off, even open source physics engines are using cross platform GPU programming languages (OpenCL) to handle physics on the GPU. Here is a video of the bullet physics engine running on the GPU:

On top of that, the Open Dynamics Engine has OpenCL solvers and it could be argued that the "proof of concept" of running it on the GPU is completed; and it is likely that within a year a couple developers could have it ready for production environments.

 

Then there is the "steep and always changing learning curve" ... which is a problem because you have multiple hardware manufacturers with very different ways of doing things and the hardware is changing rapidly with how something is best handled on one generation of card being very different on the next generation of card. With static hardware like a game console you have 5+ years of stability to learn and improve what you're doing.

 

 

Now, to be clear, I wouldn't expect a physics simulation as large as the one in the video to be in many Wii U games; but even a simulation with 5% as many objects (1600 obects at the same time) is probably adequate for the vast majority of games out there.

You'll find the vast majority of developers working on U titles using Havok because they get a free licence with every dev kit. Nintendo really have pulled out all the stops as far as encouraging Wii U development goes. Free Greenhill's MULTI IDE, Havok, Autodesk middleware and Unity 4 licences. That's tens of thousands of pounds worth of middleware for nowt. Indie devs in particular will be all over this, we'll see a shitload of ports of Windows Unity-driven games. Nintendo have also adjusted the cut they get from sales to the developers' favour too. The Wii U eShop could very well be the go-to place for indie developers.



Ethomaz, you should also count that WiiU has a separate DSP for the sound
Overall, i would say that the U is 1.5 more powerful than the Xbox360, but it has a more advanced Gpu so games that fully take advantage of WiiU hw should look noticeably better

Seperate DSP for sound doesn't really equate to anything more than a couple of % of CPU cycles.
