It would seem alot of people dont really understand Surface.

1. Surface RT is the tablet pitched against Ipad. And surface RT does more and has more functionality and features. Surface RT does what it set out to do.

2. Surface Pro is a replacement for your laptop and your tablet. A High end laptop + buying a tablet would cost you around or over 1000. But means you have to navigate and contend with 2 devices. Surface pro offers what those 2 do seperately on 1 device. Its high powered like an ultrabook and light and swift like a tablet.

It is worth its price. If you wanted Ipad prices that was what RT was for. An Ipad but better. For the same price.

Ford could create a hybrid muscle car and SUV but that doesn't mean it is a good idea or that there is a market for it ...

Beyond that, you can buy a Nexus 10 for $400 and a 15 inch laptop with a Core i5 and 6GB of memory for around $600 which doesn't make the surface much of a "value"; especially for people who see the surface as being an inferior tablet than the Nexus 10 and an inferior laptop to the Core i5.

When I used the Surface I couldn't help but think if the Zune, a device with some interesting ideas that were mostly poorly executed and was years behind the competition in the features consumers actually care about.

I always saw you as a neutral poster but anti-microsoft bias in this thread is starting to show. The moment people start calling Zune out you know something is up.

Nexus 10 dont run Win applications and a $600 laptop wont be touchscreen .. so yes you can happily juggle between two devices or get ONE AND USE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.

P.S

Ford could create a hybrid muscle car and SUV but that doesn't mean it is a good idea or that there is a market for it ...

According to this logic..hybrid vehicles shouldn't be there.. right ?  So the new hybrids that all car manufacturers are releasing that run on both petrol as well as electricity isn't a good idea.. THEY SHOULD EITHER MAKE PETROL OR ELECTRIC VEHICLE ?

OR the handheld consoles ? hybrid between casual gaming as well as serious gaming..they are bad idea too.

Microsoft know about what is good and what the future holds much better than you. They are not a new startup. they have been revolutionising the computing world for decades !

Regardless what you think, its fact that Surface Pro can do alot more than Nexus 10 just as a tablet.

Your car analogy doesnt work here. Computers are hugely different.

We already know how much more functional RT is than any Android Tablet or Ipad. And in 1-2 years time Win 8 will have more apps than anyone. Win 8 has already sold more than any IOS or OSX or Droid OS ever. And all who have it can access the Marketplace for apps.

Surface RT is for those who want an Ipad competitor with great build quality and the same pricing.

Pro is for those who want both combined into 1. Of wich impressions are incredibly fast and functional as a full Win 8 desktop. And incredibly functional and fast as a tablet out and about.

Nexus 10 doesnt even stand a chance wit its lack of features in comparison. Not to mention the need to still have a laptop.

I own an XBox 360, run a Windows 7 desktop at home, and preferentially choose a Windows desktop at work (where I have the options of Mac, Linux and Windows). I'm not against Microsoft in general, I have defended their products in the past, but Windows 8 is garbage and the Surface is a product that will never be successful.

Windows will continue to have the most desktop focused applications, but the small sales of the Windows 8 phones and tablets will ensure that mobile apps will continue to be primarily developed for ios and Android.

I recently switched jobs to a company dedicated to mobile app development with a lot of gigantic customers, our current Window's 8 strategy is exactly the same as our Blackberry strategy ... "F*ck it, it doesn't matter. If they want to they can use our HTML5 client" ...

Well I guarantee a year from now that attitude of your company will change drastically. Not only as Windows 8 got more manufacturers on board than Google for bringing out tablets. But as of end of January 2013 the market is being swamped with Win 8 tablets from loads of manufacturers at both low and high price points.

The tell tale will be Xmas 2013 and just how many copies of Win 8 has been sold by then. Already many more developers are not doing ios or droid ports to WP8 and Win 8. They are making proper Metro apps from the ground up. Which when done like that are so much better than the IOS or droid apps. Even on WP7 it was obvious comparing popular apps ported over from IOS against proper Metro apps from ground up Metro apps were faster, and muc more intuitive.

Cant wait for Metro apps to take over. They are so much better.

My strategy was the same for Android when it came out.. And look what has happened over the years..it's developer support is growing at a bigger pace than iOS ( me included).

I believe within a year or so .. the market will be saturated to 50% Android and 25% each to iOS and Windows. and i see Windows as the overall winner because it still covers 90% of desktop market where Google and Apple dont exist. So learning Windows development will give you 25 % of mobile market share and 90% of desktop .. iOS will give you 25% of mobile market while android leaves you with 50% mobile market.

Microsoft does realize that they need to be at least $100-$200 LESS then the Apple IPads for their Surface to have any chance of selling right? Nexus & Kindle Fire HD are already less they the Apple IPads and are selling very well. You can bring a barely good tablet to market at a much higher price and expect consumers to run out and get it.

Do you really think that you have the answers and that Microsoft doesn't know this?

The financial analysts covering the Surface have said that msft doesn't want to offend its hardware partners by selling the surface for too low of a price.  So, msft wisely keeps it as a premium product, which will invigorate demand of windows 8 to a greater degree than if it sold a budget product.  People associate great hardware with the OS and don't separate the two as much as you'd think, well the joe six pack kind of consumer anyway.  So, the strategy is probably the best thing that msft can do right now.

You are right and i will quote " The surface will be termed flop within a couple of months "

Microsoft strategy is something else.. same as Google.

Seperating the OEMs and if you look at the three big companies - Apple - iPad , Microsoft - Surface , Google - Nexus .

Only Apple among these has their motive to generate profits from the devices and that is why they sell at a good margin of profit and generate brand value that there devices generate good resale value .. all effort of their is to sell devices .

Microsoft and Google depend on OEMs .. so their motives with their devices is not to make their products commercially successful.. they just want to generate buzz around their products .. Surface is creating buzz for Hybrid tablets , Nexus devices generate buzz for their updates, quality and price value ( which transfers to Android buzz).. they dont want good resale value or else.. To achieve this they implement their own techniques - > Microsoft - Overpriced Devices , Google - Limited supply of Nexus products.

Microsoft and Google products are just to create hype - > Products that are expected to be successful will only be released by OEMs.

I still want a surface.. how often you get a microsoft hardware :)
