Surface RT does what it set out to do. 2. Surface Pro is a replacement for your laptop and your tablet. A High end laptop + buying a tablet would cost you around or over 1000. But means you have to navigate and contend with 2 devices. Surface pro offers what those 2 do seperately on 1 device. Its high powered like an ultrabook and light and swift like a tablet. It is worth its price. If you wanted Ipad prices that was what RT was for. An Ipad but better. For the same price. |
Ford could create a hybrid muscle car and SUV but that doesn't mean it is a good idea or that there is a market for it ...
Beyond that, you can buy a Nexus 10 for $400 and a 15 inch laptop with a Core i5 and 6GB of memory for around $600 which doesn't make the surface much of a "value"; especially for people who see the surface as being an inferior tablet than the Nexus 10 and an inferior laptop to the Core i5.
When I used the Surface I couldn't help but think if the Zune, a device with some interesting ideas that were mostly poorly executed and was years behind the competition in the features consumers actually care about.

Regardless what you think, its fact that Surface Pro can do alot more than Nexus 10 just as a tablet.
Your car analogy doesnt work here. Computers are hugely different.
We already know how much more functional RT is than any Android Tablet or Ipad. And in 1-2 years time Win 8 will have more apps than anyone. Win 8 has already sold more than any IOS or OSX or Droid OS ever. And all who have it can access the Marketplace for apps.
Surface RT is for those who want an Ipad competitor with great build quality and the same pricing.
Pro is for those who want both combined into 1. Of wich impressions are incredibly fast and functional as a full Win 8 desktop. And incredibly functional and fast as a tablet out and about.
Nexus 10 doesnt even stand a chance wit its lack of features in comparison. Not to mention the need to still have a laptop.

Windows will continue to have the most desktop focused applications, but the small sales of the Windows 8 phones and tablets will ensure that mobile apps will continue to be primarily developed for ios and Android.
I recently switched jobs to a company dedicated to mobile app development with a lot of gigantic customers, our current Window's 8 strategy is exactly the same as our Blackberry strategy ... "F*ck it, it doesn't matter. If they want to they can use our HTML5 client" ...

Well I guarantee a year from now that attitude of your company will change drastically. Not only as Windows 8 got more manufacturers on board than Google for bringing out tablets. But as of end of January 2013 the market is being swamped with Win 8 tablets from loads of manufacturers at both low and high price points.
The tell tale will be Xmas 2013 and just how many copies of Win 8 has been sold by then. Already many more developers are not doing ios or droid ports to WP8 and Win 8. They are making proper Metro apps from the ground up. Which when done like that are so much better than the IOS or droid apps. Even on WP7 it was obvious comparing popular apps ported over from IOS against proper Metro apps from ground up Metro apps were faster, and muc more intuitive.
Cant wait for Metro apps to take over. They are so much better.
