I agree. Mario Kart 7 is a far superior game, but has yet to even hit 7 million sold.

True but the 3DS user base is still small compared to the Wii one. Also, I think the main reason people buy mario kart is forlocal multiplayer. On an handled console you have to own multiple consoles for local multiplayer and that is a limit. This explains also why Mario Kart has sold more copies on Wii than on the more popular NDS.

btw. Yes Kart 7 is a superior game.

Right. In the end, quality is only one of many key factors in determining sales.

Though I think like MKDS, MK7 will have fantastic legs as the increased install base of the system inherently leads to more opportunities for local multiplayer.

Very deserving sales. At the end of the day, the games that are most fun to most people earn the majority of the sales. And everyone seems to like Mario Kart, it's hard not too, simple and fun and competitive!

ill admit i am quite salty about MK getting those sales when modnation racers deserves much more but what can yah do xD

I think you should be applauded for admitting what this thread is really about.  Props.

But Mario Kart Wii is a great game from what I hear and deserves every one of those sales.

It's called bundling.  It works quite well, I hear.

But wasn't it long past 20 million before it was bundled though?  I believe it was.

So I don't think bundling (in one region?) is the main reason why it sold so much.  It sold because it's a great game.

great game + fun game = amazing sales

There are no "deserved sales" or "undeserved sales". Sales are what they are: a measure of appeal. Nothing more and nothing less.

I get that you're bothered by the idea that Mario Kart Wii has a higher appeal than the console iterations of any Call of Duty, but you shouldn't be. It doesn't matter.

I can't stand yearly interations of COD and think it's a cancer on the gaming industry as a hole. And yes sales can be deserved and undeserved based on quality of the game.

Um, not sure exactly how to respond to that..... Counting the numbered sequels Assassin's Creed has innovated an entire genre (open world stealth).

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

Mario Kart Wii

  • Used really accessible motion controls with a sweet wheel accessory
  • Best use of WiiConnect24 to date, easily the inspiration for Autolog feature that later showed up in NFS - Hot Pursuit
  • Asynchronous Online Multiplayer done right with ghost challenges, tons of awesome online stuff
  • Mario Kart online with spectator mode, party up, join up... all kinds of Nintendo firsts
  • One of the most played game on Wii, just consult the Nintendo Channel for number of hours played including average per person
  • Local multiplayer games that are good always end up with ever-green sales
Mario Kart Wii sales didn't happen in first 6 weeks. It is an ever-green sales title because the word of mouth on it is good. Local multiplayer helps it keep up the word of mouth based sales demand. Other developers need to key into this fact because when people play online, they do it alone with other people that are playing alone, but people that play local multiplayer create new demand.
So Mario Kart Wii sales are fully and persistently earned.

It was some 23-24 millions before it started bundling with the Wii.
