If "innovation" means another type of controller I don't really care. It's cool, but I don't see how it makes anything more fun. I'd rather just have an altered version on the controller I already love and then have some peripherals that experiment a little more.

In this day and age software probably counts for more anyway (OS and its features, UI etc.).

It's not about a controller tha makes things more fun so much as it is about a controller that allows you to play your games more often. It's nice having a console that I can play games on even when the TV is being used for other purposes. It means I can have the console in the living room rather than in my bedroom where my ps4 will go. That alone is innovative. If anything else comes of the controller that is only icing on something that is already a cake.

That sounds cool, but I imagine I'd hardly ever use it. It's just not a big deal. And if somebody bothers you about using the TV while you game so much then surely you'll just move your set-up somewhere else.

Don't most people have multiple TVs anyway? Isn't playing on the TV preferable? The range also sounds like an issue... I've heard something like 20 feet from Ninty but less than half that from others (if it is indeed 20 feet than that's fine).

I don't mean to sound like a downer, I know there are positives to the Gamepad and I know it has potential, but it doesn't feel nearly as significant as the Wiimote was for example.

Reggie is right, better graphics won`t attract people as much as this generation has. The Wii U already has done things that will probably be replicated when PS4 and Xbox3 come out: Miiverse, Nintendo TVii and the Gamepad (with the ability to keep playing when others watch TV or change the dynamics in multiplayer).
From what i have been reading i have seen more people interested in these 3 little aspects than the actual library of games and they were happy and surprised with them!

He is right, it is all about the innovation but I just don't find WiiU very innovative.

The best things about WiiU are the ability to play off the controller when the TV is in use and the Miiverse.

Miiverse is easily duplicatable with a software update even on existing consoles.

So is the ability to play off-screen - in fact it's already done to a limited degree.   The next Xbox will probably allow it with a tablet + wired or bluetooth controller.  PS4 may allow you to stream your games to any TV/PC/Tablet in the house and still use your controller to play.   I'm speculating a bit here but this is easy for them to do.   And considering a real tablet is infintely more useful and handy than a gamepad, that will be the preferable option for most people.   Nextbox and PS4 would most likely have the horsepower to allow up to 4 people to play with tablet/controller as well, instead of the 1 (or poss 2) that WiiU allows.

So I wonder if Reggie really wants them to react to what Nintendo is doing.

I hope to god the controllers for PS4 and Xbox 720 stay the same. The Wii U controller is TOO DAMN BIG! (imo)

Honestly, I liked the wider controller.  For me it was nice, but the design of it made my hand hurt.  Specifically my thumb, and that was without real use.  It usually takes hours of using an Xbox 360 controller before my hands start to hurt significantly.

New experiences are needed to wow customers. The tablet controler is cool. It's different. People notice that more than more detailed graphics. People will see the GamePad and say, "oohhh, that's hi-tech, like an iPad". Xbox and Playstation will need something like that to make people take notice. More polygons will only cut it for tech-heads.

"In the end, our competitors need to react to what we're doing in the marketplace and need to figure out what their innovation will be," Fils-Aime told CNET. "It's likely that faster processors and pretty pictures won't be enough to motivate consumers. They need to react to what we've done and we need to continue innovating with the Wii U and we will."

...

more motivating then worse looking pictures for late ports of games i already own..

rofl, just no

Nintendo is the dominant co. atm
They couldve released a monster console with the Wii money, but they are playing smart, looking at the whole picture
they are playing safe and being conservative, thats all, just look at how Sony screwed it with the PS3

He's obviously talking in the context of "majority", not "kitler53".

It's worth considering that the 360 and PS3 had very rough starts, causing both companies to lose billions just to keep them in the game. What ultimately saved them was third party exclusivity, in the sense of multiplatform games not making their way to the Wii. This is pretty much what Microsoft and Sony have to hope for again, because games sell systems.

at 138.4M ... i am in the majority.

Smartglass and Vita are their response. And, if there was demand for tablet controllers in games, those will be just as successful. The only thing they need to respond to is New Super Mario Bros. Neither of them have even tried to compete. on that.
