Forums - Sales - The Christmas holiday is coming. Will Vita finally reach 5 mil before 2013?

I don't take much stock in BoM and neither should you!!! The 3DS was given a BoM around $100 when it first released and was bleeding money when the price was cut to $170(it started profiting 5 months after that); showing BoM is not what it's cracked up to be.  What we do know is that Kaz himself said that the Vita hardware won't be profitable until 3 years after that (when it had better software expectations it could be longer now).  That's the official announcement and until Kaz or any high ranking Sony official says otherwise should be authentic statement (not some neogaf poster).

Vita was losing money on HW sales at launch, we know it, and it obviously has to recover initial investment too.

Kaz never said HW won't have been profitable for three years, but that he expected PS Vita to "turn a profit" in three years. Given that PSV uses mid-range smartphone tech (except the screen, that's mid-range for resolution, but more towards high-end for quality), expecting just HW to become profitable in three years is obviously a period too long, should phones HW take so long to become profitable, and considering they launch new models each year, producers would be all bankrupt, so that "turn a profit" has quite likely to take into account initial investments too. Obviously, even accepting the most favourable meaning, PSV will surely take longer to reach that goal, even starting selling well in the next weeks, a full year has been almost lost, so four years becomes the new goal. But hey, you're free to believe the other possible meaning, that HW will lose money for three years from launch, I won't try to persuade you otherwise.

Yeah 3 years sounds long but until Sony actually says otherwise that is the official situation of the handheld.  It doesn't come from me, so I don't need convincing; it came straight from Sony's big honcho Kaz.  Maybe you can convince him that the PSV isn't losing money?

As much as I'd like to see it pick up a bit and create some competition for Nintendo to keep them on their toes (and help Sony, which is in real need of something that sells well.) I really don't think so, I think it MIGHT break 4-4.5 million, but there's no way I can see it getting to 5m sold by the end of the year.

Vita is not bleeding money. If anything, Sony is making a small loss on each Vita. I'd say it'll be profitable by next Christmas at $250.

I wonder where that "not losing money" sentiment comes from. It also happened with the 3DS: People said it had a BOM of $110 so it must be making money.

There is not just production costs you also have (more or less) fixed costs: Working costs, advertisement, shipping and warehouse costs, development, software development, service and repairs, taxes, etc. and things like the strong yen that you can't really influence. These all add up! Just because you sell something above the BOM doesn't mean you are making money. Sony didn't expect the Yen to be this strong, they didn't expect sales to be this low. The strong Yen is horrible but bad sales are even worse. Lower sales mean:

1) Higher production costs than expected (cost per unit improves at high manufacturing rates)

2) Less money from peripheral sales

3) Lower software sales but dev costs staying high (!)

4) Lower royalties from 3rd party publishers due to lower software sales

etc.

Couple that with the "fixed" costs I mentioned above (you could spend less money on advertisement but that would mean lower sales... death spiral here we come) that won't get away, the strong Yen, Sony's financial situation (lower credit rating means higher interest rates), the need for heavier bundling (console + game --> less games *sold* per customer) and Sony probably sitting on a huge amount of unsold Vita's (because when they say "we'll sell 10 million" they are going to produce 10 million... it happened to Nintendo before with the Gamecube --> they halted production to avoid even higher stocking costs) and it becomes obvious that Sony's estimates were simply wrong and the Vita is and will be more expensive than they imagined.

This also has an effect on price drops: The hardware could be profitable at $250 next year but other costs could be so high (calculated at a per unit basis) that selling the device for $199 might actually mean smaller losses for Sony due to higher sales, more software sold, more royalties. A rock and a hard place...

This post was not aimed specifically at you, btw. We had this discussion when the 3DS released and I'm sure it'll pop up again once Nintendo presents their quarterly numbers - people will be like "what? But they said just one game per console = profit!?"

And back on topic: It will be close. We'll have to see what the price cut does and how much retailers are going to reduce prices. Sales should go up from here due to the holidays kicking in. Never say never.

I think COD Vita will do more harm then anything. People will buy the bundle, or get it for the name itself.....see how bad it plays, and assume all Vita games are severely downgraded from their console counterparts.

COD definitely changed Vitas fate, just not in the way people expected it to

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

My opinion: It wont even reach 4 million.

um...Nintendo's BoM was at $101 and that was during 2011.

I think that when people realise that only the wii u offers a true console experience in the palm of your hand, the vita will become irrelevant. It looks very last gen beside the game pad. Blops 2 vs declassified, what more needs to be said.
