Forums - Nintendo - Wii U froze on me.

Sounds like something that can be fixed with a patch.... Hopefully.

If you've never bought a system at launch before ...

Systems at launch generally have some problems. A good launch will generally have (most of) the problems isolated as software problems that are 'mostly' fixed by patching within a couple of weeks; a bad system launch will have a significant hardware problem that kills systems that isn't resolved for months.

A system freezing is generally not something to worry too much about as long as it doesn't happen regularly. If it is something that is common and/or reproducible contact Nintendo Support.

Good sir, you are talking out of your butt. Never experienced any of the problems listed with my DS, GBA, Wii, or GCN. Tis be a recent trend at best because modern devs are lazy and apathetic.

Older systems (NES, SNES, Playstation, N64, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Gamecube, PS2, XBox, and the Nintendo DS) generally didn't have much in the way of built in software so most problems experienced were hardware problems; and first generation hardware generally had a much higher failure rate than later revisions ... but with the XBox 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS and PS-Vita the inclusion of (more) complicated operating systems has resulted in more software problems in their systems.

I'll agree with Homer, you're talking out of your ass.

The difference with the Wii U is that it's Nintendo's first system with a real OS.  All prior Nintendo gaming systems when the game was inserted, the game booted via the OS on the game cartridge or disc.  With the Wii this was adapted somewhat, in that the system software was upgraded on the hardware via either downloaded updates (when connected) or disc.  However, the games themselves booted into their supported OS.

This is how the Wii achieved backwards compatibility.  As long as older OS versions could be supported, everything the game needed to boot was on the disc.

Both the current generation consoles, as well as the last generation consoles have had an updatable OS.  The current generation of consoles, provided system updates via both online download and game disc.  The PS3, the Wii, and the Xbox 360.

Wii U launch isn't going very well. Beyond the shortages, I keep hearing all kids of problems....

Wii U launch issues are no different than any other launch console

Don't think any other console ever got bricked on Day 1 or had 5gig firmware updates....

You're right.  Because no console has ever had a 5 GB firmware update.   It was only 882 MB.

As for day 1 bricks.   Every console launch in history has had day 1 bricks (or just broken consoles in the case of those prior to firmware updating).

All reports are that the intitial WiiU firmware update is between 4.7 and 5GB.

That's because all those reports are using the same 5 GB line posted on Twitter.

Ok pulled out the cord and it turned on fine but now I'm concerned with the fact that the console was only on for 4 hours only 1 of those hours I was actually playing a game and it already froze.

It just randomly freezes when trying to load programs.  It gets to the title screen then freezes.  I had to pull the plug on mine too (when it froze on trying to launch Miiverse) because the power buttons weren't turning the system off.  It shouldn't mess up anything considering it is frozen and not updating or doing anything else.

Netflix still freezes my Wii. Wii was fine.

You can believe what you want, but I can't think of any game console released in the last 14 years that didn't have some issues at launch ... Only the big problems that are handled poorly (RROD) are usually remembered though.
