You're right.  Because no console has ever had a 5 GB firmware update.   It was only 882 MB.

As for day 1 bricks.   Every console launch in history has had day 1 bricks (or just broken consoles in the case of those prior to firmware updating).

All reports are that the intitial WiiU firmware update is between 4.7 and 5GB.

That's because all those reports are using the same 5 GB line posted on Twitter.
