Forums - Gaming - Psychology of a fanboy (my personal perspective)

madskillz said:
I know a lot of people consider me an MS fanboy, and that would be further from the truth. I don't like Sony's direction, nor did I like the way Sony shafted video gamers and focused on HD. What's really bad is - folks continue to buy PS3 without doing any real research. I am not talking about folks who do the math, like the games and the like. I am talking about folks who will toss down their Visa and pick it up - and don't have a real reason to.

It took 8 replies before the first fanboy post came, a VGchartz record And all that coming from someone who already owns a console capable of hd and who pays for online play. Talk about slapping your visa around.

The original post is meh, it looks like the poster has the need to blame someone for games or company directions he doesn't like. With that narrow minded approach he missed out on a lot and is now trying to glorify himself as someone who has been cured of his flawed behaviour. He would have had an easier time being openminded in the first place.

Diversity is a part of any market and plays a huge factor in the gaming industry. Just be glad you have got enough examples of what you don't like to underline the things you do like in the industry.

I for example always thought of Mario as being a bigger gay symbol then the village people (Gazz puts on anti flame suit), but I don't go around trying to persuade people to my point of view. Many people are extremely content with that little guy with mustache and gardenpants and I am fine with that. Perhaps it will be easier on you to just celebrate the differences in the market instead of critizing them.

Talk about slapping your visa around.  (Where did he say that PS3 was a waste of money?  He clearly says 'I am not talking about folks who do the math, like the games and the like.'  He is talking about people who do ZERO research before picking up their game console, and deciding based on brand alone that it's better.)

He would have had an easier time being openminded in the first place.  ('ppreciate that.  Who exactly did I 'blame' for anything?  I talked about PERSONAL problems on the internet [stupid idea, I know, cuz I'll get people like you responding].  Can you point me to where I 'blamed' anybody?  I said that I supported the console that I preferred.  Like I said many times, I have a diagnosed, irrational obsession.  I never said I was 'cured' of anything!  I believe that I said I am doing my best to deal with my PERSONAL problem--I said many times that I knew I was being irrational, and that there was no rhyme or reason to my feelings.  Also, what did I miss out on?  I OWN ALL OF THE CONSOLES!)

I was more of a fanboy before I joined Vgchartz.
A lot of users accuse me of hating Nintendo, which can't be further from the truth since the Wii is the only product (console) from Ninty I have not liked.
It also seems that people make assumptions if you say you like either Wii or PS3; if you like one, you must loathe the other by default. Strange logic.

At heart, I'm mostly a PC gamer, and 90% of my gaming time is spent of the PC playing retro style RPG's or longdrawn strategy games (a la Civ series or SimCity).

My official stance on platforms:

PC: Currently my favored platform, simply because there are thousands of games new and old availiable and also because it is by far the best platform technically and for custom/usermade content and add-on's.

X-box 360: I did not like the original box one bit, and my initial reaction to the 360 was the same. it has shifted though, especially when I see what a huge effort MS are making with it. I still hate MS as PC dev's, but they're redeemed in the console department in my eyes.

PS3: As soon as my most anticipated games arrive, I'm buying one. I had such a good time with the PS and the PS2 and I recognize the same potential entertainment value in the PS3 eventually.

Wii: I was very excited about when it was first unveiled, but upon launch I was really disappointed. Ninty said it would be only slightly less powerful than it's competitors and that it would be a gaming revolution. Neither is true by far in my opinion. It really sucks since I own (ed) and loved NES, SNES N64 and GC... I might get one for SMG, MarioKart and the Zelda series, but only because I REALLY want to continue playing those games and not because I agree with Nintendo's development scheme.

I am sorry, did I imply that the PS3 wasn't a waste of money or even got close to saying something similar? I just pointed out that he threw his money around on the similar products and yet seemed convinced his product was better.

You blamed the PS3 and Sony for example and you still continue to blame Sony for unclear reasons. Your irrationality shows by the reply I just got from you. I made a critical, but civil post regarding behaviour you admit too yourself and you blew up. You even critize me for sharing my thoughts although you ask for everyones in your first post. If you want to be patted on the back, then go to your mommy.

Although its part of human nature, its still no excuse for being a fanboy.

@Gazz: Yes, I do want other people's opinions. I'd just prefer if they didn't insult me personally, if that's not too much to ask.

Good read Kitchen Sink. My wife is so tired of me acting polite (or downright complaining) about my gifts that I started buying games for her to give me.

Madskillz comment is correct (about people not doing research about the PS3) because many still believe it plays PS2 games (there was a thread on that).

Meanwhile, I am not sure what issue Gazz has with the original post. Sony has used its last two consoles as part of a greater multi-media campaign. While it worked very well (getting DVD players out in Japan) withthe PS2, \it has caused great consteration with the price and delays associated with Blu-Ray (though Sony looks like it is having the last laugh on a format for the first time). Personally, I don't see a great deal of difference between the offerings of the PS3 and Xbox 360 to truly differentiate them yet -- at least as compared to the Wii.

Finally, Manus keeps saying that buying the 360 helps the US economy. I am still not clear how buying a product made in China by an international corporation accomplishes this. (There is the old return of capital arguement -- but even stock markets and holding are not international).

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

First, it would help if you took a class in reading comprehension and learned what words mean. Fanboy is someone dedicated - really obsessed with one viewpoint, and won't consider another, even when inaccuracies are pointed out. You are a fanboy, plan and simple.

Second, I find it laughable that you talk about openmindness, yet talk about Mario being gay. Wow ... what a hypocritic. How in the world do you dream this stuff up?

The conversation was rather civil until you showed up. You fit into the mold sink was talking about. You have made a purchase, and will defend it against enemies foreign and domestic. You are just proving that sink's post is correct in every way, shape and form. Unlike you, several 360 owners wouldn't have a prob buying another system - hence Wii360 reference - but I am not sure most PS3 owners would consider an inferior product.

It's best if you consider your words more carefully than rattling off foolishness.

You call yourself irrational and yet you don't want to be insulted? Well, that's pretty irrational of you. There's a big difference between being critical and insulting and you called critisism upon yourself when you posted this topic.

Edit: @ madskillz: What purchase? What are you talking about? I never said anyhting that might suggest I have a PS3 or defended it. I just said you already had your mind made up on the reason why people buy a PS3. Buying on brand name alone, where do you come up with that conclusion? Praising someone trying to stop being a fanboy and then rambling against the PS3 with unfounded arguments at the first chance you get. Even your sig is full of fanboy crap.

Now you are trying to point me out as stupid because you lack a proper defence for your behaviour. Shame on you. I pointed out that I consider Mario as a gay symbol, but state it's my point of view and let everyone else enjoy their favourite character. It was an example and if you actually bothered to read my words you'd know. Stop being a troll.

""I think you got a lot of things right. However, I am a different story. I'm pro XBox 360 and pro Microsoft because being so helps the American economy and thus helps me. America's economy is floundering, almost all of our major industries are posting huge loses year after year, they are being bought out, or they are forced to outsource to stay competitive in the global economy.""

==> basically you re buying MS just because it is an american product
and later you will say about the PAL sales :

"fuck Europeans, they don't buy the Xbox360 because it is an american product"

you are not a pro-Ms fanboy, u are a pro-american fanboy ...
