Same with the Vita, great tech on paper, but the end product suffers from poor technical design, so graphical games like Uncharted or Liberation only could use half screen resolution (so the same resolution as 3DS!) and look really disappointing for gamers who believed the "a console experience on the go" marketing line.

Sony really needs better technicians who know how to use and create really great tech for console.

I'm afraid all next-gen consoles will be vastly inferior to high-end PCs, even at launch, not to mention few years from now. Which for PC crowd could be either very bad or very good thing, depending on what approach (some) developers take.

 

i think developers aim only for one thing: money. yes, a high-end-pc is most probably even better by now than what we can expect from next-gen-consoles but i am sure games will be developed for consoles due to very good sales-numbers. well, pc-sales are hard to count nowadays with digital distribution but i highly doubt that assassin's creed 3, for example, sold nearly the numbers it did on consoles (not to mention both consoles combined...). i think the situation will be like it was the last years: the pc *is* of course technically more advanced but 1. it is not really used by games and 2. it is quite expensive to develop a game especially for consoles and again for pc so i think pc will still get ports the next years, with polished graphics.

Oh, I have no doubt that a lot, if not most developers will do what they were doing this gen - develope for consoles and than lazy-port them to PCs - that's the "very bad" part in my original statement. On the other hand, since, unlike doom&gloom predictions of many journalists and analysts, PC gaming is on the rise again, I do expect for at least some of them to step up the game and develop for PC, and than downport to consoles (something like BF3 for example), and honestly, in 2-3 years from now, I would not be too surprised to see a developer or two (old one or maybe someone completely new) making exclusive that will push PCs beyond limits, the way Crysis did it in 2007 - that's the "very good" part in my original statement. Unfortunatelly, looking back at this gen, I'm suspecting "very bad" part to be more true...

I lost interest in following the PhysX stuff. It started with dedicated PPUs (Aegis or whatever it was called), dedicated graphic cards, then went to doing it in existing GPUs. The former solutions are too expensive for average Joe, the bechmarks I'd seen of the latter had (sometimes very) dramatic decreases in fps (no surprise here, and I think only a few games actaully tried it).


My point is more that it's scalable like everything else, and with consoles, you don't have to worry about a hundred other different types of hardware, it's more in the hands of devs, and I'm just stating that it can be used that way and is quiet important to think about.



Can't they make a hybrid machine that allows devs to either use the cell, or use GPGPU depending on if they want to make an exclusive, and if they want to make a multiplat?

Except that America is the largest market for video game HOME consoles, and Home consoles only launch during the holidays in America (Sept - December).

 

They never launch during the spring.

So it's either HOliday 2013.....or HOliday 2014.

8 HOme consoles in a row that launch in America during the Holidays (Sept -Dec).  That's an undeniable proof of pattern.  You'd have to prove this overwhelming pattern wrong before anyone should want to believe anything to the contrary.

They could but it probably wouldn't be particularly cost effective, especially when they're both used to acheive similar results.



If the Cell processor (when it comes to the PS3 version) has more room for improvement it's up to the last of us, two souls and FF versus to show it.
