I think both are going to have an abysmal holiday.

Also this thread goes hand in hand with the thread I made months ago -- http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=143469&page=1

What? Consoles have only gotten more holiday-centric. Specially XBox 360. It had its best holiday ever last year did it not?

No I think 2010 was it's best holiday. But judging from the current horrid sales (NPD data and all) they are not going to have very good holidays.

My favorite 2 months of the year and my favourite thread every year! :D

Next week is Halo 4 bundles. Week after is Cod bundles. Then Black Friday?

Just gonna sit back with a smile on my face.

LOL This is the part of the year that always saves the 360's ass. These last two months. Microsoft dropped the 360 price for a short period of time, so that should get people excited for the 360, especially with Halo carrying the load. Microsoft always has a system seller around the holidays even though the rest of the year was lackluster, so this could be good. The PS3 will be full of games next year and Microsoft will only have one, but some of thier top games will be out at the end of next year. They have some $199 bundles for black friday with InFamous so that could help. We'll see how this all turns out.

Sorry to disappoint some Xbox fans, but there is no COD BO2 bundle in USA. Halo 4 is the only bundled game and I don't see how will this boost sales since any one who likes to play Halo already owned an xbox in the past 7 years.

The 360 owns the holiday season. It's their only time of the year where Microsofts marketing and sales are at peak performance. Halo and COD being on the same console is a system seller in America, so don't underestimate what you've seen year after year. In this period of It all comes down to powersellers and marketing and we all know Sony sucks at that. Lets see how the PS3 $200 bundles do. Halo will be selling via word of mouth as well as marketing because its proven its value in the first week and millions of other people will be trying to get their hands on a 360 for it.

Is this the first time since 2009 PS3 gets in the lead?

No. PS3 was also in the lead throughout last year. It even ended up winning(according to VgChartz data)
This year the PS3 lead pre-holidays is even bigger. There is only 1 big bundle this year for 360 and that is Halo 4.(Last year they had Modern Warfare 3 and gears 3)

PS3 will easily win the year in both VgChartz data and official shipment numbers.

But it won't take 2nd. 360 just has to hold out one more year :)

There is NO magical cut off point for when a console stops selling, it sells until the last console is purchased and that determines who finishes in what position.

Theres the window of relevance, A.K.A when the generation is the most recent one....when the spotlight is on you.

After the WiiU releases, we are technically into the next gen. 360 fans can technically say they won the HD console wars for the gen. But I personally am going to do this the fun way.....wait until all 3 have released next gen hardware before declaring any sort of victory.Thats the cut off point.

Because when the spotlight is off Wii/PS3/360 and shifts to WiiU/PS4/720, is it really worth celebrating any victory from last gen? Celebrating taking not 1st, but 2nd.......7 years after release.........and only when the next models have released.

You can celebrate that if you want, but that looks like lowered standards and a hollow victory at best. PS3 has exactly one year to achieve any kind of victory that matters.

No point celebrating a racing victory when the race allready ended. Your just running extra laps while the people allready left the stadium to watch the next race unfold

Think of it this way, the PS3 will still be in the race because it still has gas while the others broke down. Wii is already getting lapped.
Meanwhile the PS3s younger brother, the PS4 will start the race with the 720.

When the PS3 takes 2nd place, I will celebrate. It'll just be a small party though.

I just see a generation ending being different then a console selling afterwards.

PS2 sells to this day, but its generation ended in November 2005 with Xbox 360. That is my biggest point I can make here. PS3 can overtake 360, and that is casue for some celebration, but the generation itself will end this November with Wiiu.

You, sir, seem like you are in your own little world.

You say a generation ends when a new system from next gen is launched but a launch of product is a bussiness venture in which a company will begin 'selling' a said device. That is the starting line; selling. So it only makes sense that the finish line is when it 'stops' selling. That's the logical way of thinking. The illogical way of thinking is coming up with your own rules in which the only possible outcome is the one your happy with.

Feeling free to respond if its a logical response.

You should also add year gap.

Yay!!!

Both just might have their worse holidays ever.

These consoles are dead and MS and Sony need to both act fast. MS needs a drastic price cut by 100 dollars. They could easiky afford it and it would boost hardware sales a lot.

But they wont do that

No, there's no way that will happen. PS3's worst holiday was horrible if I recall.

OT: I expect the gap to widen to about 2.4-2.5m by year's end.

The gap will stay at 2million. Microsoft will hold off Sonys holiday advances like they do every year.

The fact that Sony has only tied the 360 thus far has to be seen as a failure regardless of what happens, considering they came off the most successful console of all time, and have sold well in three territories against Microsoft's two territories.

Failure in sales, success in games. Sony wins in the heart of a TRUE gamer regardless of what place they are in for sales. Yes it is a business and they need to make money but I believe that sooner or later people will realize what they have been missing by not buying a Sony console. Hopefully they don't let us down with the PS4 (which they won't).
