I'm a network administrator.  I've already crushed the Wired/Wi-Fi debate in the other thread so I won't repeat it here.  To sum up, your Wi-Fi can suffice just fine for online gaming if you optimize it correctly.   But if you don't want to, or can't, work on your settings, then buy the $15 dongle.

If you let a $15 dongle separate you from buying a console or not, you never intended to buy it in the first place.

That's a big 'if'. We're talking about homes with numerous devices (phones, microwaves etc.), walls and a whole host of different building setups. Virtually no one is going to optimise their wi-fi connection; it's designed for convenience. On average, a home wired connection is going to confer an advantage over a home wi-fi connection.

And I don't disagree that it will on average.   I never stated that Wi-Fi was automatically equal in all respects to Ethernet.  Only that it can be optimised to the point that it will not hinder your online gamining experience.  See the other thread for details.

It's not sexy. Not at all. It just looks like a DVD player, not a console. The controller is really too much like the X360. The shape is identical. They could have at least tried to do something original with it, You'd think they would be capable of innovating with a game controller ;)
All in all, the looks surely aren't going to be the reason this thing sells.

The main controller is the Gamepad, not the Pro Controller. Get a clue.

Umm... What does it change? It's still their product.

I'm not an MS guy (for me it's Sony>Nintendo>MS), but I have to admit that judging from the looks of the consoles the current X360 looks best, the PS3 is second and Wii U is third. Bear in mind, that you'll have to find a place for an external HDD next to the console, which has to be included as a drawback when in comes to judging looks (and not only looks).

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

This thread turned annoying real fast.

Especially the controller debate. Really? On top of it being old news, it has been proven a million times already that the XBox controller is almost 1:1 the DreamCast controller with GameCube stick placement. Every modern controller in the first place is a direct evolution of the SNES controller, and like mentioned above, the NES Max before it. The WiiU Pro Controller is just a combo of the Wii's Classic (Pro) controller and the GameCube controller.
The final esthetic design was 'inspired' by 360's controller probably, but it's not the same. Likely Nintendo too figured out this type of design provides the 'best' feeling during gameplay. All it shows is that traditional controller evolution leads to a 360-like controller in the end.

Seriously, some people need to educate themselves in the history of video-games and in this case controller evolution. Especially if they are 'new' to gaming.

Secondly, the 'WiiU-is-ugly' argument. Personally, I think the prize for best looking console doesn't go to WiiU, but instead goes to either Dreamcast or GameCube (in black), but it is definitely not ugly. The PS1, that thing was ugly. Hell, the Famicom (Japanese NES for the un-educated ones among us) was likely the most hideous home-console the world has ever seen, not counting some of the Pong-consoles. Also, it's not like the BBQ-grill top on the SuperSlim or the 360 being so large it needs a concrete foundation were brilliant design decisions.

Talking about heat problems is also nonsense, every piece of hardware Nintendo made has been super-reliable. You can check the Nintendo World Store in New York, even a bomb-blast can't stop a GameBoy from working. They know what they are doing. If you'd actually informed yourselves you'd know they've spend 1000s of hours on testing these things.

MS should sue nintendo for copying their controller.

Nintendo should sue MS for copying the GameCube controller.

Atari should sue Nintendo for copying the 2600. lol.

^
Magnavox (if that still exists) should sue everyone for copying their initial idea.

I don't see how ms copied gc controller, it does not look anything like any xbox controller I have seen.

I think he's refering to the placement of the analog sticks...

Wait, what?

Xbox controller was revealed before the gamecube controller. So if anyone copied, it is nintendo. Once again.

The Gamecube launched 2 months before the original Xbox, so unless you have a source to back your claim up I call bullshit.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

And the fact that Nintendo showed this off in 1999/2000.

They're all variations of the DualShock which is derived from the SNES layout.

There, case closed.

Why is the console so elongated?

Why are you asking this in two different threads when it's already been answered? Are you really looking for an answer or just trolling?

Never got answered in the other thread. Someone finally manged to answer it in this thread so don't worry I won't ask it again......calm down.

Still a bad design choice IMO.

Seems like you're selectively reading, so let me just paste this here, from the other thread:

-Console looks ugly. Why did they choose to make it long instead of wide? t's just weird....
-Why the power brick? Is there a technical reason for this? Does the power supply not fit inside the console? Why is PS3 the only console to not have a power brick?
-Wii U Pro controller looks nice. Wonder if its actually usable. The button placements seem like an odd choice.
-Wii U gamepad disapoints. Needs its own power chord to charge. No charging via USB, only 3-5hour battery life despite the console being the one doing all the work.....
-Launch line-up is nice but not anything that convinces me to jump ship since the best of the line-up is available on PS3/360 as well...

I'd prefer longer to wider. Why? Real estate on my entertainment centre front is scarce. Still looks a damn sight better than the plastic sliding top of the new PS3.

Power bricks are modular. Being the part that is most likely to fail (maybe 2nd now if you include a mechanical HDD), it can be replaced. It also reduces size of the console (once again, valuable real estate) and makes it more robust, due to not being in the same vicinity as hot AC transformers, bridge rectifier diodes and voltage regulators.

Button placement on the Wii U Pro controller seems very logical for FPSes. I personally prefer the 360 controller at the moment, due to the most common sticks and buttons being closer to the centre of focus for the controller, but I'd like to see how this one feels.

The design choice could be considered more smart than bad, especially those who do not wish to use up real estate in the entertainment centre. A lot smarter in an entertainment centre setup than a plastic sliding top, no?

I don't think I ever went back to that thread after I posted.

I really learned something from that comment though! So having a power brick is definitely the smarter choice as it gives you more freedom in console form factors....know this now it makes me wonder if the YLOD on the phat PS3s is caused by this?
