probably the same reasons why FF, Star ocean, Breath of Fire, and a bunch of other franchises jumped ship from Ninty. Not really a mystery.

Those games used FMV and pre-rendered backgrounds that needed the CD format for space.  Street Fighter Alpha series could have fit on a N64 cartridge, and Street Fighter III series on a Gamecube disc.

wouldnt getting those handrawn animations up and running on the cartridges harder than CDs?? Im just asking cause i dont really know, IMHO it think it was just a matter of being too late to the party. The first alpha game was released on PS/Saturn at the end of 95, N64 wasnt released till Sept of the next year. Now why not put the sequel out on n64? No clue, guess they figured release it on SNES instead with a bigger install base? Hell maybe they just hated the damn controller. N64 was pretty much done by the time Alpha3 was ready. THe 3 series completly missed the more popular PS1 but that might have been tech issues. Im just spitballing

Part of it was that to get it on a moderately priced cart, Capcom would have to compress things losing music or animations similar to how on even the PS1 games, they couldn't make them arcade perfect due to hardware and storage constraints.

The Arcade (CPS2) ROM size for Street Fighter Alpha 3 is only 23 MB.  N64 carts range in size from 8 to 64 MB.  It might not of have been an Arcade perfect port on the N64 but what arcade to console games were in that era?

I'd say the Dreamcast versions of the fighting games were

matter of fact, the Saturn version of Marvel vs. SF was kinda arcade perfect.

It was near perfect on the Saturn but that was bundled with a 4Mb RAM upgrade cartridge.  If Capcom were willing to bundle RAM why wouldn't they be able to use a bigger cart on the N64?

edit - was talking about Marvel  vs. Street Fighter on the Saturn above

N64 rocked. I loved the thing. Most of my favorite games came out on that system. I don't know why people seem to hate on it so much.

Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Zelda: OoT
Zelda: MM
Harvest Moon 64
Goldeneye

Why the hate?

No hate from me, I'm a total N64 fanboy (hopefully it's not a bannable offense when referring to yourself).

When was Alpha released again? Even the smallest N64 cartridge at the time (I believe it was 8MB) cost so much money to produce. It really wasn't until really late in the N64's life that you started seeing the larger cartridges like RE2 and Conker's Bad Fur Day become a viable option.

It's a shame we never got to see many games make use of the larger cartridges. It's why I really wish N64 homebrew would take off :/

Hundreds of game software and hardware developers have gone under since the 8bit days, but Nintendo remains. I don't think anything went wrong.
