http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-10-25-single-player-is-a-gimmick-says-mid-core-developer

Oh man.. I want to laugh.. but reading it just makes me rather sad.

I am starting to hate the term "gimmick." It's being muddied and thrown around just as much as the "casual" moniker to describe something you don't like.

..........now thats a first.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Some people are just very close minded and think that whatever they say is right

Lazy headline aside, "gimmick" might not be the right word but he has something of a point. Leaderboards, social sites, achievements, etc. are all ways to make the kind of pure single-player game that arose because of the proliferation of home gaming systems into a sort of multiplayer experience without resorting to shoehorning in PVP.

You are just ''starting''? then you've not been here for long enough... u_u - haha

Well he is right if you think of a competitive game, but does he understand video games have expanded to much more than that? In Heavy Rain I made it to the last chapter with everyone alive and screwed up by killing them all. By this guy's logic my whole playthrough would have been pointless because he thinks it is all about "the final score."

Strange. I recall playing lots of multiplayer games on the NES and SNES..... The idea that single player gaming rose up because of some sort of lack of ability to do multiplayer gaming is completely wrong.

And if that was the case that it was a gimmick only used because multiplayer was unavailable, people wouldn't still be buying single-player games such as Skyrim...

I'm normally a very tolerant person.. the fact that I *hate* it holds strong meaning for me. :P

Gaming is just a gimmick to sell you plastic. That's the REAL business.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Not because of an inability to do multiplayer, but out of a commercial necessity to make sure that everyone who bought a game could play it. Having a game require 2 or more players would limit your sales potential quite a bit in the pre-internet days.

Don't conflate the term "gimmick" with "fad". He's not saying that just because multiplayer is now technologically feasible in a way it wasn't before, that means single-player is going away. He explicitly said otherwise.

Did you actually read the article, son? Be honest!

Exactly. The article really isn't that offense (as coming from someone who hates the idea that all games should have deathmatch multiplayer that too many developers espouse).

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
