Breaking news! Single player modes are a gimmick!

Strange. I recall playing lots of multiplayer games on the NES and SNES..... The idea that single player gaming rose up because of some sort of lack of ability to do multiplayer gaming is completely wrong.

And if that was the case that it was a gimmick only used because multiplayer was unavailable, people wouldn't still be buying single-player games such as Skyrim...
