Lazy headline aside, "gimmick" might not be the right word but he has something of a point. Leaderboards, social sites, achievements, etc. are all ways to make the kind of pure single-player game that arose because of the proliferation of home gaming systems into a sort of multiplayer experience without resorting to shoehorning in PVP.
