Could you add a list of best selling franchises by number according to VGC? I've made a list before, it's a tiny bit outdated, but I'll put it anyway. It is as of 13th February 2008, so almost 4 months old. I'll update it later. I edited it with a few updates, but not everything is rewamped. Top 11 at least is. It's million sellers only.

1. Mario - 318M (Up 16M from Feb 13) - http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=Mario&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

2. Pokemon - 156.7M - (up 4.7M from) (http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=Pokemon&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

3. Grand Theft Auto - 61,5M (Up < 100K) - http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?
name=Grand+theft+auto&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

4. Final Fantasy - 58.8M (up 1.8M)- http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=Final+Fantasy&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

5. The legend of Zelda - 55,8M - http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=The+legend+of+Zelda&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

6. The Sims - 55,5 M http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=The+sims&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

7. Gran Turismo - 46,9M http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=Gran+turismo&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

8. Tetris - 46,5M - http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=Tetris&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

9. Donkey Kong - 45M - http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=Donkey+Kong&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

10. Dragon quest 42,4 - http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=Dragon+Quest&console=&publisher=&sort=Total

That's all the ones I care to link. For the rest, you will have to search million sellers yourself.

11. Sonic 39,6M

12 Madden 36,5M

13. Wii Series: 35.3M (up 4.3M) (as of 13th February 2008)

But Super Mario Land, Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros., Tetris and Duck Hunt were all bundled too. So Wii Sports passing SMB will still be significant.

As to the top selling franchises, I believe the top 5 is actually roughly like this:

1. Mario -- Well over 300M
2. Pokemon -- ~160M
3. Sims -- 120M+ (They're celebrating 100M for "The Sims" alone right now... SimCity and other Sims games account for the rest.)
4. Final Fantasy -- 80M+ (They reported sales of 80M some time ago.)
5. Grand Theft Auto -- 70M+ (They reported sales of 70M some time ago; probably now closing on 80M with catalog sales and the GTAIV launch.)

I'm not sure if one of the major Football franchises is up there around 70M too, but I think all three (FIFA, Pro Evo, Madden) are pretty high up there. And Tetris is almost certainly up in that range too. And then there's a whole bunch of series in the 40-60M range, including Donkey Kong, Zelda, Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, Sonic, Dragon Quest, Tom Clancy, etc.

Right-o. Here we go again.

#97. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (PSP) 4.99M
Still Sony's only current-gen presence in the top 100.

#90. Big Brain Academy (DS) 5.19M
Nintendo's other brain game may keep trucking towards 6M.

#86. Gears of War (360) 5.22M
There's been some suggestion this is overtracked, but reported shipments may not include bundles. It will be interesting to see if Gears 2 sells more or less.

#81. Mario and Sonic at the Olympics (Wii) 5.35M
Maybe the biggest surprise breakthrough mega-hit of the generation, Sega has said the game has shipped "around 10M" combined. It was boosted by the Olympics, and with no Mario Party 9 announced, it may be boosted again by the holidays.

#80. Mario Party 8 (Wii) 5.38M
Now sort of "the other Mario party game" compared to Mario and Sonic, but could still reap the benefits of Christmas to pass 6M sales.

#69. Grand Theft Auto IV (360) 5.86M
Riding a North American install base advantage to become the better-selling GTAIV SKU.

#66. Super Mario 64 DS (DS) 6.12M
The game that keeps on giving for Nintendo. SM64 may have sold 1M copies a year in 7-9 of the last 12 years.

#61. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (360) 6.36M
Even Activision probably isn't certain how they turned COD4 into the most popular shooter of all time.

#55. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) 6.73M
Closing in on Melee at #49/7.08M.

#53. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) 6.86M
Hasn't had the tall legs that people expected, but still should have long legs.

#51. Wii Fit (Wii) 6.96M
7M sales is likely just the start for this game.

#47. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) 7.35M
Absolutely unholy ongoing sales. Destined to be one of the best-selling games ever. Could reach 11 or 12M by the end of Nintendo's fiscal year in March.

#38. Halo 3 (360) 8.17M
Appropriately, wedged in between Halo 2 and GoldenEye 007.

#32. Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS) 9.69M
Crawling towards the big 10M mark; likely the last DS game to reach.

#24. Mario Kart DS (DS) 11.68M
Has blown past Mario Kart 64 to be the best-selling MK game, and will soon pass SM64 to be the #6 best-selling Mario game ever (including pack-ins)... Until MK Wii passes it.

#21. Brain Age 2 (DS) 11.91M

#20. Brain Age (DS) 13.95M
The original game is actually selling better right now, but both could pass 15M. Between the two games, Brain Age is basically the biggest unqualified success for any new franchise in history, save perhaps Pokemon.

#18. Wii Play (Wii) 14.40M
The world's only bargin bin killer app.

#14. New Super Mario Bros. (DS) 15.46M
On a collision course with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2) to become the best-selling (non-pack-in, single SKU) game ever... But it better watch out for Wii Play and Wii Fit.

#13. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (DS) 15.71M
I don't entirely trust the number for Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, but even if it's low, this game should still pass it, reversing the trend of Pokemon games selling less.

#8. Nintendogs (DS) 19.45M
Now passing the old Nintendo pack-ins, a level of sales only Pokemon RGB and GS ever reached before.

#5. Wii Sports (Wii) 28.00M
May pass Duck Hunt as soon as next week.

World of WarCraft is over 10 million subscribers but that is currently paying subscribers so we can probably guess this game is actually at 12-16 million copies sold world wide.

StarCraft has over 10 million sold world wide

WarCraft III and Diablo 2 both have over 7 million sold world wide

the Half-Life 2 sales on this site are heavily under tracked, it is possibly over 10 million sold but if not in the 7-9 million range.

Doom 3 sold very highly close to 10 million sold if not over mostly do to the Doom name.

The original Doom and Doom 2 both have over 10 million copies sold.

Just thought I'd fill some PC games in there for you that aren't tracked, I only put sales for the games that I knew for certain were within the ranges that I put.

If you can link to those games, I'm sure Erik will consider putting them in () or something. He's using VGC numbers, and as known they don't have a lot of data.

Half-Life is undertracked due to Steam. ioi is currently unable to add downloaded games to the total, as the numbers are too vague.

the pc games are not well represented. There are plenty of successful ones without numbers, or with underrated ones.

I'm pretty sure World of Warcraft has sold over 10million. Last numbers we got from Blizzard was the 9.3 million active accounts back a couple of months ago. So definitely WoW has over 10 million copies sold.

I wonder how many free x day trials are in that figure considering I can't sneeze without coming across 5 of those.

-edit-

And don't say those free trials are insignificant. They have a new thing where if you sign up a buddy (even free trials count) and if you level with said buddy you get triple experience on everything.

14 days of free triple experience on enemies *and* quests is quite nice especially since it is in no way against the EULA to duelbox.
