Forums - Nintendo - Wii U "surprisingly powerful," textures "could be used in a movie."

we don't know how nextbox or ps4 will perform. next gen is not about more fps or higher resolution but a lot more detail/grahical details and bigger worlds. improving both detail *and* resolution *and* fps is something not that easy to handle. not for nintendo, not for ms and not for sony.

I agree but I think 1080p should be standard for all games in the nextgen... today is harder to buy a HTDV not FullHD (in the past some were 1080i or just 720p)... can we have exceptions? Of course but not the 1080p became the exception like this gen (I can count in my fingers how many game run in 1080p this gen).

About Wii U I have some questions yet about the CPU/GPU... for now seems like the CPU is a little weak and the GPU is ok with some really nice features added... the memory I think it's ok too... I prefer 1.5GB for games and 512MB for the system but 1GB for games is the minumum I can accept.

I want to study more about Wii U when it released.

i want to study it, too ;)

to me it is not *that* important if a game runs at 720p or 1080p - both looks very good on hdtvs. i don't want 1080p if devs have to sacrifice details and/or fps.

There are some notables jaggies in the current gen even with AA... so 1080p can improve it.

The new generation needs a resolution upgrade for sure... PC is already going over 1080p.

Another quote by a developer "actually" developing a Wii U title on the power and versatility of the Wii U: http://wiiudaily.com/2012/10/wii-u-developer-wii-u-is-a-powerful-versatile-machine/ Anyone still thinking that the Wii U is on par with the last-gen HD systems must be the same people that threw fits when Bayonetta 2 was announced as Wii U exclusive!!!

No one thinks that... the Wii U specs are better than current gen but not that better.

It's not like 3x or 4x the PS360... it's just 1.5x.

I think Wii U still will have trouble with 1080p@60fps.

Rendering two screens that add up to 150% of the pixels at twice the framerate of highly optimized XBox 360 & PS3 games in launch games developed (primarily) by second rate external teams ... Yeah, that sounds like "50% more powerful"

Realistically, the GPU is probably between 2 and 4 times as powerful as the GPUs on the HD consoles; and, when game engines become as optimized for the Wii U as they have been for the HD consoles (resulting in a 50% to 100% improvement in performance) and developers reduce the framerate to match most HD console games (resulting in 50% to 100% more detail on screen), this performance difference will likely become more noticeable.

Show me this games running at twice framerate... for now what I can see is game running in 720p at the same framerate... add a little screen 854x480 for that and you have 40% more pixels to render... Yeah... that's sound like "50% more powerful" .

Since I don't notice the diference between gaming at 1080p or 720p (mainly because my TV isn't that big but also because I don't play just in from of it, I leave some space between me and the TV), I don't really care if WiiU or the other next gen consoles can natively run games at 1080p graphics.

Honestly, if WiiU is powerful enough to run at 720p the games that the nextbox/PS4 run at 1080p it will be enough for me.

Btw, I have hope that next year, with games that are being developed with WiiU, Xbox360 and PS3 in mind, we start to see real improvements on the WiiU version. And I think that with Aliens: Colonial Marines we'll see them.

Please excuse my bad English.

I thought it had been reported that Mass Effect 3 was running at 60fps?

Edit: Regardless, being able to output 50% more pixels while maintaining a steadier framerate (as has been reported with Assassin's Creed) even though these are rushed early ports would imply that it was more than 50% more powerful. After all, it is fair to say that the HD consoles are "maxed out", the Wii U is not "maxed out", and we will likely see 50% to 100% greater performance out of the Wii U over time; which would still put it at being 2 to 4 times as powerful as the HD consoles.

The version running in 60fps was the the PC version... not Wii U.

"in the case of Mass Effect 3 we suspect that the PC version was being used." - Digital Foundry

The developer, Straight Right, only said "The game will run at 720p."  for now.

Edit- The Assassin's Creed 3 Wii U showed until now lacks a lot of graphics features present in PS360 version.

@OP: I'll believe it when I see it...

Your own article states that they based their fps figures on the sizzle reel which showed 30 fps gameplay but when played on the show floor,  many games were actually 60 fps.

That article is also comparing game builds that are now nearing 6-8 months old.  And even gos ont o admit, "these games have been created on incomplete hardware."
