Forums - Sales Discussion - Quarter 2 Sales Update (VGC Exclusive Special)

Introduction

Hey guys, and thank you for reading (or glancing at) my Quarterly Sales Blog. This is my Quarter 2, 2012 end special.

For those unfamiliar with this (and most will be) I joined VGC because I was interested in Video Games sales, particularly the PS3/360 battle. I started making this quartly sales updates to reflect trends in game sales.

What these are, are simply tables listing the best selling video games and consoles. In BOLD are games which have increased their position (e.g. 75Th -> 73rd) from my last edition (usually the last quarter).

What this does is show you what games are selling well with respect to others. It shows you where the latest games (usually bold since new games sell well) are in respect to other games on a sales level, and it shows you how well old games are carrying out.

Most of you will be unfamiliar with my Quarterly updates because I've only posted 1 on VGC in the past. However I have done this type of analysis since January 2008 on GameTrailers. So older editions are here

Q3 2010

GameTrailers Archive

I will keep posting these exclusively on VGC since I have basically abandoned my Gametrailers account. So expect these every quarter.

You may notice this is a Quarter 2 Special and not a Quarter 3 special. This is because I needed to update my Q2 special before making my Q3 special (or else how will I know how well a game has done in that quarter specifically). So since this is a new thing for VGC users, I thought it would be appropriate uploading my Q2 special first and then my Q3 special later. For this edition, and this edition alone, changes in sales and positions are reflected off data for the first half of the year (Dec 31st 2011-June 30th 2012). This is because I forgot to do an update after Q1. However all future updates, and all other past updated are quarterly.

Also, for the Quarter 3 special, I will be showing graphs which show hardware and software sales for the last 3 months (similar to those on the weekly analysis, but this will be for the entire quarter). At the end of the year I will also include annual sales graphs, both from an aligned launch perspective (cool for Wii/PS2), and from a yearly perspective (cool for PS3/360)
Data updated to June 30th, 2012

Enjoy!!

General Information

There are 5 tables. The first table lists every video game selling over 5 million units, on all platforms. The second table lists every current generation video game selling over 3 million units. The third table lists current gen software sales for platforms specifically. The fourth table lists the best selling console’s of all time section, and the fifth table shows regional sales of consoles which have been listed in the VGC weekly sales database at some point (So I still have PS2 data).

Remember bolded games or systems increased in rank since last edition.

PS2 figures on the above graph are VGC values as of December 31st, 2011, adjusted for the changed regions (Before they stopped giving us PS2 data). PS2 sales for North America are 55.72 million according to VGC, and I scaled off 10% for USA numbers (Canada's population is about 10% of USA's, not many sales in Mexico). PS2 figures for EMEAA are 63.86 million according to VGC. Japans numbers are adjusted by 26,000 units since PS2 is still selling about 1,000 units a week there according to Media Create.

Wikipedia confirms PS2 sales in Japan and NA, but puts PS2 sales in the EMEAA at about 8 million higher. So clearly there is a tracking issue with VGC sales data in EMEAA (This is probably why they stopped tracking it). Since VGC has made a drastic change to giving Europe data instead of EMEAA data, I will use the 48 million sales data and add 10% (Wiki has data up to 2009, VGC has it up to 2012, since North America sales are 10% higher overall according to VGC in North America, I apply the same adjustment to Europe). The vast majority of PS2 sales currently are in developing regions of the world, and places which get consoles late.

Now some of my own crude PS2 sales estimates. Last Year PS2 sold 684,300 units in North America (According to VGC, I kept track of the sales). According to Sony, Annual PS2 sales fell 36% from 2010-2011, but only about 12% from 2009-2010, and half that from 2008-2009 (There was a big drop prior to 2008). Using this trend, I would estimate PS2 sales be 50% less then last year. So If PS2 sold 684,3k last year in North America, adjusting to USA figures this gives us 615.9k units, and losing 50% gives us 307.95k sales in USA. Using the same logic, and knowing PS2 sold 299.7k in Europe(Since Europe sales are 65% of PS2 hardware sales according to Wikipedia, I estimate Europe PS2 sales are 0.65 x 461.0k) this puts PS2 sales in Europe at 149.85k

I will continue to make estimates on PS2 sales for the rest of 2012 based off scaled sales data for PS2 from 2011, but next year I will only update PS2 sales with concrete Media Create sales data (So only for Japan).

I'm going to post up the Quarter 3 Sales Update sometime next week. I just really wanted to post something up now. Won't take long to update the Q3 edition.

Will do, been a while since I updated those.

Kinect Adventures I will say Heavily bundled because i don't know how many sales are due to Kinect console buys and how many are due to standalone kinect sensors.

Wait....was Halo 3 bundled other then a limited edition console at launch?
