I like NSMB2. It is basically NSMB the first, but with better levels, more of them, an emphasis on high scores using coins, and new features like co-op and coin rush. Could it be more original? Yes, but it brings more new stuff to the table than lots of other 2D platformers, and is top-class at the old stuff it does. Is the game generous with lives? Yes, but the punishment for failure isn't the risk of a game over screen, it's being sent back to the start of the level or midpoint flag. I don't understand how the original gets such praise and the sequel gets such bashing.
All in all, I consider it a middling Mario game. Not the best one ever, but definitely the best 2D Mario ever made specifically for a handheld. So, it's better than the "Land" series and its prequel. That's good enough for me.
Honestly, I have two main complaints. First, it's hard to unlock some of the levels, making the game feel shorter than it really is. There are something like 80 levels, plus 9 Rainbow levels and Toad houses, but you can go through the game and only play about 40 of those levels. Also, reaching a million coins is a tad bit unreasonable. It's not as bad as it sounds, but after playing for 20 or 30 hours, I've only reached 225,000 or so. Farming for gold is surprisingly easy, especially with the DLC. The 3D effect is also underused, but that's not a terrible thing; it's like complaining that a DS game doesn't use the microphone.
I give it a 8/10, and that's on my harsh grading curve where only one game has ever received a 10/10, and only one 3DS game, Kid Icarus: Uprising, has a 9/10. One of the best games on the 3DS, and definitely .
