Forums - Nintendo - Would the DS and 3DS have sold the same with out Touch Screen and 3D capabilities?

I highly doubt the DS would've sold as much without touch.

3D in 3DS, I don't know.

The DS would have sold worse without the touchscreen, the 3DS would have sold better without the 3D.

But then how would we have such awesome puns as "Metal Gear Solid 3D" or "Super Mario 3D Land"?

i meant NO (wth happened here...)

Huh? The 3DS will survive on games and games alone. Nintendo needs to not push the 3D like they did with the touch screen. But since it has a touch screen as well it is good to go.

the thing is they were pushing the 3d at the beginning, but it became clear that most people didnt give a damn. Which is why it didnt sell as well as they thought it would which is why they havent been pushing it

I could be wrong but the DS also started "poorly" and everyone at the time were saying it wasn't selling well because people weren't interested in the touchscreen - or didn't care for it. What happened after is history.

The first DS sold - if sources are reliable  - 6.5m in the first seven or eight months. The 3DS sold 3.5m in just over one month after the Japanese launch. The 3DS also was $100 more expensive at launch.

Maybe they are not pushing 3D because like the touchscreen Nintendo will give it a couple years and maybe people will come around to it. Time will tell.

To answer the question regarding the DS: NO. I think without touchscreen PSP would have wiped the floor with the DS.

It is harder to give an answer regarding the 3DS. Nintendo had to do something new. I think just another same ole DS would have got customers thinking they were being milked. It's all about new ideas and new technologies.

I think without 3D, DS sales would have fallen drastically.

Thats all well and good, but the fact is that Ninty was expecting 3DS to do much better, whether that was because they thought the 3D would do it, it following the success of DS or both. But it did not meet their intial expectations

What would be the point of two screens if you only have a way of controlling one? It would have been just a map for every game or used to display hints. i can't think of what else it could have been used for if there was no touch screen. As for 3ds, I don't know. I would have traded the 3d feature for a second control nub from the demos I've witnessed but whatevs. If anything I guess it drove up the price. Would have preferred an hd screen.

hell, no, Mario Kart and NSMB barely used it...

wrong question. what you should be asking is would they have sold the same if they didn't have the big N as publisher.

Course not, some of DS's best selling games made good use of the touchscreen. I doubt 3D has anywhere near the same impact for 3DS though.

I agree with most of the comments here. The DS would not have been as successful without the touch screen. The 3DS would probably be as successful with or without 3D capabilities.

I think it's a shame though. I really like the 3D. I remember playing Pilotwings Resort in Target before the system was released. I was mesmerized.

Of course not. Without the Big N making games for their own systems they would be crushed. I wonder how long they can milk the same games though? I think they need another Rare to make new characters for them.

yea the Rare before that $800m buy out from MS. boy that was a waist of money.

well as long as there are dedicated fans that seem to have no problem with it, then they can do it forever. but having a fan like me, is a test every time.

i knew i was going to buy a Wii and PS3, and that i wasn't going to buy a 360. i hate to say i regret the purchase of the Wii, but indeed i do.

but i know i'll likely (32% chance) buy the WiiU. next box almost no chance, PSnext near a sure thing. but they all have to prove to me thier is a solid reason for the purchase, or i'll stick with PC.

I like the 3D as well. But there is no real need for it. Kind of like the Rumble pack. Beyond immersing you into the game more and a few game play tricks there is no real need for it. I only asked about the DS because I really never cared for using the touch screen as a controller. Although there were some that I enjoyed. Mainly eshop titles and Wario.

That's a fair comparison. Fun but inessential.

On the other hand, I think the touch screen on the DS was absolutely essential. Sure, a few high-profile games barely used it, but those that did use it were great. And they were great because of it. Elite Beat Agents comes to mind.

For me, the DS is an all-time great system -- the best Nintendo handheld, and one of the very best video game systems ever made.
