Hell no. He wasnt. The games were the icon. Not the character. Vastly different from Mario.

So you're telling me a relatively large amount of people would not have recognized him?

Yes they would recognise him at the time they were playing the games. But, ask the majority now who that is? I have finished it and I had to look where he was from that instantly says everything about  this character.

So you agree that he was insanely recognizable. Good, That's progress.

As for why he's not recognizable today, that's because

  • He only starred in one game.
  • That game released eleven years ago.
  • The game he was featured on has had three different sequels all with different characters.
That's why he's not an icon today, not because he was generic. Had he starred in Vice City, San Andreas, and GTAIV, he would still be an icon.
Same could be said for Master Cheif, Mario, etc. Had they only starred in one game, of course people would forget them after ten years.

He still wasnt iconic. The game was. Not the character. Huge difference.

You should research GTA on the PS2

Wait a minute...I thought iconic meant insanely recognizable?

Since we've alread established that he was insanely recognizable, then what's your grounds for saying he's not iconic?

I think iconic means instantly associative to video games, not instantly recognizable.

Edit: In other words seeing that character immediately associates your brain to meaning everything in the world of video games.

No idea. I have played all GTA games put together for a total of maybe 6 hours.

You both got it wrong it's Ben Affleck, just a really bad picture of him.

What means could you use to determine if a character was associative to video games?

I could say Tony was associative to video games until GTA sequels released without him, but we need to agree on what qualifies someone as being associative to video games.

Could you replace him with any character and the games still sell?

Answer is yes. Look at GTA 4. Different character noone cared.

Could you replace MArio? No cchance.

Could you replace Kratos? No chance

Could you replace Masterchief? No chance. Look at ODST sales or Reach compared to Halo 3. In fact watch Halo 4 eclipse alll others for Masterchiefs return.

Could you replace Nathan Drake will William bottomfeeder? Easily.

I didn't say Kratos was generic, I said some would argue that he is more generic than Drake.

And, I agreed that Drake's hardly iconic (though I wouldn't call him generic either), but you could take Master Chief out of Halo and it is still...well...Halo. I think if you took Drake out of the Uncharted series, many of its fans would be turned off and it wouldn't be a true Uncharted game without him. We'll likely never find that out since Drake will always be there, though. Much like Mario, Sonic, Donky Kong, and Pac-Man, who's names made their IPs as great as they are. I think without Drake, Uncharted wouldn't be viewed in the same manner.

The funny thing is they've already done that.

LOL. And look at all the sales of the 3 non MC Halo games in comparison. Proof the character as a meaning outside the games hes in.

Halo 4 will further confirm this with my prediction of the highest Halo game sales.

Interestingly GTA sold more with a change of character. Meaning the character meant nothing.

So now the definition has changed to being irreplaceable to the franchise? Okay

Using your logic

Halo Reach is selling enourmously well without Master Chief.

Therefore, Master Chief isn't an icon.
