I could say Tony was associative to video games until GTA sequels released without him, but we need to agree on what qualifies someone as being associative to video games.

Surveys, video games sales for games containing that character, volume of marketing and merchandising (movies, clothes, bedsheets, cereal, tv shows, etc.), time since last seen and were there any new candidates in the mean time to take the spotlight? Things like that ;)

So you're telling me that a 10% drop in sales is enough to prove that a character is an icon?  

There are TONS of factors that could have caused a 10% dip. It's so minscule that anything could have caused. But you know what, let's assume that MC did cause the 10% drop in sales. Let's just ignore every other potential factor and assume that MC was the sole cause. Okay, I'll agree that MC is an icon. However (by looking at the numbers), Master Chief is only an icon to 10% of Halo fans. The other 90% just don't care - The "character meant nothing" as you said.

Apparently, your definition of an icon means Master Chief is only iconic for 10% of Halo fans. Good to know

Some would argue that Kratos is more generic than Drake. Before the boom of the Uncharted series, he was probably Sony's most memorable character (behind once PlayStation-only heroes like Crash and Spyro, and still behind PlayStation exclusive character Cloud), but since Among Thieves, I'd say Kratos is eclipsed already.

Doen´t generic mean it is something typical, something that has been done over and over again? Well if that is the case then how is Kratos generic?

And an iconic character should be somebody who is bigger then the game he is in. Like Super Mario, Sub-Zero & Scorpion, Kirby etc. Most of the named characters have iconic games but are not iconic characters per se. For example you could make Uncharted without Nathan Drake. I know many people would be pissed off but it would be basically the same game just with a black guy instead for example. But the whole God of War franchise would be upside down if you throw Kratos out of God of War.

I didn't say Kratos was generic, I said some would argue that he is more generic than Drake.

And, I agreed that Drake's hardly iconic (though I wouldn't call him generic either), but you could take Master Chief out of Halo and it is still...well...Halo. I think if you took Drake out of the Uncharted series, many of its fans would be turned off and it wouldn't be a true Uncharted game without him. We'll likely never find that out since Drake will always be there, though. Much like Mario, Sonic, Donky Kong, and Pac-Man, who's names made their IPs as great as they are. I think without Drake, Uncharted wouldn't be viewed in the same manner.


Well Kojima did that, and people still considered a MGS game and bought it as well. I think if Naughty Dog would think this is the way to go people would be perfectly fine with it, of course some would start bitchin but if the game is as good as 2 & 3 then the fans would forgive them

How many MGS games have done similar numbers to MGS 1-4  without Snake? We'll come back to this with Revengeance. You think it's a coincidence that the newest MGS game sees the return of Snake?

Well first of all. Metal Gear Rising aint Metal Gear Solid. Second thing Sons of Liberty sold better then Guns of the Patriots and Snake Eater (only god knows why). And if you watch the Ground Zeros trailer you will realize this is not Solid Snake, it is Naked Snake or Big Boss whatever you prefer. And the same thing could be done with Uncharted, if the character is cool enough. But this is never gonna happen.

ROFL. I have to work to.

But in reflection its all just opinion anyway. Well there is fact in here somewere, but that requires a huge research investigation. And  none of us are gonna do that so..

yeah we may as well stop now instead of going in circles with each other. I'm sure we both agree on this.

I know I dont fit the modern era VGC code very well being an Xbox fan and all. But I am pretty reasonable. After all I have no problem in loving God Of War 3 ( best gamme on PS3 Ive  played so far ) . In fact it is my 3rd favee game thiss generation.

So not everyone knows how I tick. ;)
