Yosuke Hayashi, the director of Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge has told Official Nintendo Magazine that he thinks Wii U could get people to pay attention to console games again.

Thanks to the GamePad, Hayashi believes that those who have drifted away from console gaming may buy Nintendo's new console.

"The biggest difference compared to other Nintendo hardware released until now is that it is not trying to complete with 'only one' feature," said Hayashi. "Obviously, the Wii U GamePad is a huge feature, but the Wii U isn't only about that. There's the hardware performance, network capabilities and, of course, the titles that fully utilise these aspects. From this all-encompassing gaming abilitity I get the impression that this hardware could get many people to pay attention to console games once again."

Team Ninja's Studio Head is also excited about the potential of Miiverse. "The biggest change of direction from the Wii would be the Miiverse. It's usually introduced as a social networking tool, but I feel it has the potential to become a kind of virtual amusement park for game fans. With SNS [Social Networking Sites] making a lot of unique advancements, as a gamer, I am excited to see how the Miiverse will grow within the realm of console games."

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge is a Wii U launch window game.

Regardless of Team Ninja's track record, I'd say it is very surprising and nice to see a third party developer praising Nintendo's newest console.  And I think primarily he's talking about Japan, because, let's face it:  handhelds are the newest craze there.  Since WiiU is kinda part-handheld/part-console, it should be a great way to connect the two things together.  That and MH and DQX beta are smart moves on Nintendo's part.

Assuming he's only talking about Japan, he might be right. Here's hoping the Wii U has non-Vita handheld levels of success there!

He probably is; after all, he IS a Japanese developer.  Having sales greater than Vita will be a cinch for Nintendo.  Whether it'll stand alongside 3DS there is another matter.

Since when are people moving away from console gaming? Last I checked this generation is bigger and better than the last.

I only partially agree. I think the really old games (like 8/16 bit) aged really well and are very playable, but I find it hard to play last gen (PS2/Xbox) games due to the now horribly outdated 3d graphics. That might just be me, I don't know.
