The iPhone 4S sold 4 million by it's first weekend. The iPhone 5 sold 5 million. However...

The iPhone 5 launched in more countries. And the iPhone 4S did not launch on carriers like Verizon or Sprint.

While theoretically speaking the iPhone 5 appears to be "selling better", given these facts the argument can be made that technically, the iPhone 5 is not selling better at all. More like equal or slightly under.

What part about "supply constraints" you didn't understand.

You do understand that Apple is counting all unfulfilled pre-orders as part of the 5 million. So if there would have been 10 million pre-orders and only 3 million devices available, they would have still said they sold 10 million.

I am not sure about that, I just read that they don't.

Are you sure? I think they don't.

Anyway iPhone 5 sold better than iPhone 4S... that's a fact.

5m in one weekend is considered "not so good" for a rather expensive piece of tech in a harsh economic climate?

Just shows the sales standard Apple has set.

iPhones are a lot like call of duty. It's just the same thing over and over but the second a new one comes out we all buy it anyway. Could this be a sign Black Ops 2 will also undersell?

No...just no. Cod actually do release the same product every year, but the iPhone's are always a huge leap ahead of their predecessors. Do you expect apple to only release a new iPhone every few years so that Android phones can overtake them?

Well then I think there is something funny going on. Apple boasted that they broke pre-order records with 2 million. And yet, most of those people got notices that they will not get their device until after October. I have 3 friends who got said pre-order notices. So all of a sudden they sold 5 million to consumers and those people that pre-ordered are still waiting for their phone? I'll be honest, I'm just as confused as anybody else by the way they are crunching their numbers.

You are probably right though, I mean when you pre-order you are being charged regardless of the delivery date, am I right?

Edit:

Marshall notes that many of those first-day pre-orders, as well as ones made after that date, have yet to be delivered, and thus Apple can not yet count them as sold.

Are we gonna get more numbers next week or not? :]

Edit 2:

Hi. I'm an analyst. My initial figures were completely wrong, and as such, I am now correcting my initial prediction with a prediction. (lol)

Apple can and will certainly sell more, question is if it can regain is US lead over Samsung's Galaxy S3. :) Personally, if I was an Apple user, idk why anyone would upgrade if they have the 4S. I don't see enough to pay the price. If you have the 4, then you're close to upgrade anyways and you get a decently faster phone, better camera, and Siri.

My friend has a 4s and we were comparing it to my iPhone 5 earlier. There is a HUGE difference. Regarding upgrading, I'm pretty sure a 4s user could upgrade to an iPhone 5 early for a relatively small fee of ~£100

Do you know how many Galaxy s3's have been sold in the states?

The only difference in launch countries between the 4s and the 5 is that the 4s didn't launch in Hong Kong or Singapore, and I can't imagine these being very large markets anyway.. And your second sentence is false, the 4s did launch on Verison and Sprint

Pre-order are sales... Apple received cash for that... and retail receive more units even if the pre-order consumers not. It's all depend of contract made with the retail... I know the pre-order contract have terms to made the consumers wait the delivery.

For me Apple is not counting the pre-orders not delivered and I think they should.
