I'd file this under "wait and see". If it's possible (the operative phrase), then it may be unlikely for the controller screen to be heavily utilized. And forget about multiplayer with two GamePads. Getting a higher-end Unreal Engine 3 game to run well on WiiU would be impressive enough (not to mention "next-gen"), though I have a feeling that a downgraded version of Unreal Engine 4 will be standard in a few years, once newer platforms have hit the market.
Of course, it depends on how far a developer will choose to push the Wii U. Nobody even tried to push the Wii further than GameCube, it seems, but perhaps history won't repeat itself.

Well nintendo said that so far that so far there is no game that supports 2 controllers, that is why the gamepad can not be bought from gaming stores in the US. I think that the WiiU scenario is something like with the 3DS. 3DS graphics could be better if developers were not forced to use 3D. This time if the WiiU developers were not forced to use a second screen graphics would also be better.
So I think that according to this news, technically the WiiU has hardware capable of directx 11 functionality, but if you render the graphics twice, there will be some compromise.
But yeah, as you said lets wait and see XD
