Forums - Nintendo - Wii U: The price is right or is $299 the new $599?

Honestly, Europe is kinda getting ripped off...
And is it true they don't even have a sensor bar?

That's what I heard. Apparently Nintendo are assuming everyone has a Wii already. An error, since they seem to want the HD crowd to move over to the Wii U.

Well, you heard WRONG. Both packages in America and Europe have the sensor bar included. And you are missing the Nintendo Land game in the Deluxe package in the openning.

Only Japan is getting the short end of the stick but they are also paying less, so one thing for the other.

No second gamepad used in ANY of the announced games, so the accessory was not mentioned for America or Europe. Is also possible that is not sold without the console (except as a replacement if you manage to damage the one that comes in your console), to avoid the stupidity of some people that will think is an accessory for their Wii and that they don't need to buy the console itself.

My answer is No and No.

I don't care how expensive the Wii Pad is to manufacture because all I want is a standard controller. If it wasn't for the Wii Pad the Wii U would probably be at least $100 less.

$300 is not the new $600. But $300 is a lot to ask for outdated hardware, a touch pad I don't want to use, and no 3D Mario or Zelda or Metroid game. I just have no reason to spend $300 right now. When the games I want do get released it will probably have had a price reduction.

Almost anything you buy is "outdated hardware" by that standard.  How old do you think the hardware in Wii U is?

Well all things are relative. Sure by the time a product hits the market there's better stuff in the pipe. What I meant is the Wii U isn't the step up many would expect. The PS3 and Xbox 360 were huge improvements on the PS2 and Xbox. That's the kind of generational leap people like to see. The Wii U is definitely more powerful than the PS3 and 360, but it's more like the difference between the Wii and Gamecube. It worked with the Wii because the whole motion controls fad went mainstream. I'm not sure people are going to be fighting over Wii U's this Christmas while MS and Sony will most certainly launch true next generation hardware within a year. The Wii U will seem like a huge leap forward to people who only had a Wii this gen, but to those still playing all the new games on their PS3's and Xbox 360's it will seem like noticeable yet marginal improvement.

I'm going to get a Wii U because I always get every Nintendo console to play Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. I'm just going to wait for those gems before I spend my money. I'm one of those Nintendo fans that doesn't really care how powerful the hardware is becuase Mario, Zelda, and Metroid are always great. But it's not fans like me that Nintendo has to convince. Nintendo has to get all the PS3 and Xbox 360 users to switch because all those soccer moms and grandparents who played Wii Fit and Wii Sports aren't coming back. That fad has died. Now Nintendo has to convince PS360 players to abandon their achievements and trophies and switch to a machine they expect to be made obsolete by the next machines that will have their achievements and trophies.

Man, it's like you guys don't know about inflation. How do you guys not know the dollar is depreciating in value? I regret clicking on this thread as now I am aware of the average intelligence of the people who frequent these boards.
299 is good for me.

$299 is decent price no matter how late they are in the generation and is on par with PS3 and 360. I guess Nintendo has $50-80 in hand per console to reduce the price if needed just like 3DS.

With that outrageous price of the tablet controller, I see my nephews fighting for the sole tablet controller in the future. Not good.

Honestly, I don't think the Wii U is as innovative in its hardware as it is with its software this time around.  Its hardware is what seems to be really pushing software usage and it seems pretty obvious by the fact that they have actually confirmed the Wii U has 2 GB of RAM, 1 GB of RAM being reserved for the operating system.  That's a lot.

$349 for the entry level could have been already acceptable, $299 is good.

Nintendo is obviously charging too much for this cardboard box.

They should fill it with 800 bux worth of parts and sell it for a 200 dolla loss to show how much they love us.

The funny thing is, that Fatty ding dong got banned for pretty much the same "hyperbole" post but regarding the Wii-U, whereas i am sure you will have nothing to fear, since you only make fun of Sony.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Time for Sony to release PS3 "True" Slim and a bundle of it with PSV?

I think that the price is a perfect balance between affordability and profitability. That standalone gamepad though is outrages!!! much more than the 100$ I was expecting or the 80$ I was hoping :/

It's difficult to compare Nintendo and Sony/Microsoft directly because Nintendo is solely a gaming company and doesn't have profits from other divisions to fall back on. So if what TheShape31 is saying about the costs is true, we can still somewhat excuse Nintendo for being so darn needy for profits.

On the other hand, I've heard people bring up this point for years and as true as it is, I can't imagine how much money Nintendo must make from their exorbitant first-party software sales (which m/s can only dream of mirroring) and of course... their merchandising (which m/s can't even begin to do, since they haven't invested into franchises like Nintendo has).

I think it would be "nice" for Nintendo to drop the price of Wii U on a sheer "I am a consumer who wants cheap things" impulse. But we all know why Nintendo had to cut the price of 3DS, and I hope that Nintendo doesn't have to reach that point with Wii U. Because if Wii U doesn't do well from the onset, Nintendo may be one step closer to becoming just another software company...

I don't think we'll ever have to worry about Nintendo being a software only company. Even during their lowest selling years (N64/Gamecube) they made substantially more profit than Sony, though it is very likely this was due to their handhelds more than their consoles. From my perspective, Nintendo has the most loyal fanbase (perhaps not as vocal as Sony's over the years, but likely much more loyal). I don't mind Nintendo making profit on their consoles (in fact, I wish Sony would take a similar approach instead of their compulsion for bleeding money) I just wish they would give more back to their fanbase in some manner, whether that comes in the form of price cuts on their system or games, new ips, fostering better relations with third parties (even if it means funding their dev costs, it's not like they can't afford it) or anything really besides letting their system die an early death.

How do you breathe again?
