"Deuteronomy 22:28-29
28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels[a] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives."

Did you miss this?

In that culture he gained the legal obligation to take care of her.  He had to treat her as a wife, if he went and did that.  If you are going to comment on this, and put it out there, do you care to show what it was like in that culture and comment on what happened to a woman who was made to no longer be a virgin?  Please feel free to, since that verse interests you so much.

I took it from Jay, who found it. Why did you and ninetails not comment on it when he put it forth? This makes one wonder whether the Bible is not just horribly outdated.

Anyone attempting to apply Old Testament laws, without understanding historical context is asking for trouble.  From a Christian perspective, it would be suggested HIGHLY that Old Testament texts are viewed through what the New Testament says.

So, if a virgin woman is raped by a man, then that man has permission from God to marry her for the rest of his life. Let me repeat that...the man that raped the woman is not punished. No...he is ordered to marry the woman...forever.

I agree with most of what you're saying but really, how is that not punishment?

Man: Hey God, can I go rape a woman?
God: Sure, but...you have to be with her for the rest of your life.
Man: Wait, so if I marry her, I get permission, No ORDERS, to marry this woman?
God: Yup
Man: Yes! Hmmm, let me pick a woman to rape...

Not too mention the lifetime of pain for the woman who would have to marry the man who raped her.

It was meant to be a silly pun, sorry.

Anyway, as others have pointed this is kind of a mechanism to protect the woman. Of course it has hideous loopholes and consequences, but it makes sense in the culture it's inserted since any better solution would cause even more problems or need a big shift in the culture itself. Of course all I'm saying is that it makes sense as a cultual guide for that time, which by itself doesn't help the case of an eternal, infallible holy-book, at least not withouth a lot of other mechanisms.

@Immortal:

Besides the selection bias other people talked about (as in the vocal atheists are the ones you're gonna notice), it's natural that atheists, on average, would be more argumentative about their "belief" for a few reasons, a good part of which have nothing to do with wanting feel like a badass rebel.

For one, since atheism is not standard, most people who are drawn to it will have a stronger opinion. Granted you'll have more rebel wanabes, but you'll also have (proportionally) more critical people and people who like debating and arguing more. It is of course true that many of these people will have an inflated sense of self-worth (as many hardcore members of any segment of society tend to have), but many won't, being in fact pretty humble.

What he quoted wasn't that so your point invailded.

The passages deal with two different issues.

But to answer this question.

First, you seem to think that is helping the rapist or screwing over the victum because she has to marry the rapist who raped. Your argument if we were talking modern times this would be great objection. But in OT days this was the best choice because she would no longer be regarded as marriageable and would therefore lose means of interdependent support. No one would marry her because she wasn't a virgin and therefor like previous stated she would be left to herself and mostly die. (note: there is nothing in the time as women fully supporting herself during those times because it would have been impossible.)In the passage we read "[He must] marry the girl, for he has [violated her]. [He can never] divorce her as long as he lives."  First,  we can see that the rapist is FORCED to marry the woman because he did in fact VIOLATE her and must support the women  FOREVER by never divorcing her. The woman/father/community leader at the time would have most likely demanded this happen because in this way the rapist would have been forced to support the woman and the woman would have financial support. Back in the OT times it wasn't about modern love and special feeling in your stomach it was about surviving and honor. This was a punishment to the man and is even phased as so.

Second,  with the father and the money related  to another ancient practice, the dowry. A girl who is married becomes part of a new family, which she goes on to support of her own means, and now relies upon for support; at the same time, her former family loses her support and assistance in daily survival, but gains nothing practical in return - hence the dowry.

This should answer the question.

So if a bloke really liked a girl, but neither she nor her family wanted the bloke, all he had to do was rape her and they could be married. I'm failing to see the punishment, especially considering that divorce back then was seen as reprehensible anyway and if you did divorce then you'd be shuned by the local community.

It sounds more like the bloke has to marry the girl because, as a non-virgin, she wouldn't be able to marry anyone anyway so the bloke must. Not really much of a punishment if he desires her anyway. More like a punishment for the girl.

By marrying her he must support the woman being forced to never marry someone else. Plus he pay the father would is provider of woman previously. This is punished not only with his money in current but forever.  If he tried to date/whatever sexual anyone else while married he would have broke another law which would lead to a futher punishment which would have been death/prisionment most likely. Most rapist don't want JUST one girl as this is very black and white view in the moment. You competely ignore the long term effect of this. Basically losing his freedom of marriage and never able to diviorce.

On the point of punishing her you ignored all my points and side-steped everything. You ignored that she would left without support and would die quicker without a husband at all. You ignore that she  will know that she will have income until she dies. You act like this nothing

better than  going weeks  with food and water see how fast you think that the alterinative is better. It's real nice in your house where you can go get a job if you need money or get help from the government. But back in time there isn't much food or water(sometimes and the only you get food is contributing to the society and if you don't you don't eat. So, right now your saying is better she not eat than have food and the man made sure to pay forever for you. The man will forced to work to pay both families so he has work harder to bring in more money then if he was single.

Your view is so black and white and a little of light hearted joking about something that was very serious and life altering. I can't imagine if I was raped and told " well you will never have food/children. You can't work so you may as well kill yourself, good luck"  It's just pure ego to make it seem like woman would want that. This reality not walfare state.

I never saw jay comment I respond to him on here on others things on here I did see.

Bible deals with the context of the event in which no one countered because they know the argument will not hold up.

Ha ha, I wonder the same thing. But, as you know, Jesus loves those even if they don't believe. It's funny however how non-christians think they are soo smart and that they can disprove the validity of the Bible, the works of Jesus or the existance of God, but when you press them, you find out that they don't know what they are talking about and ultimately can only resort to calling you crazy.

I like the way you dealt with that. I find that people in here are like race horses with blinders on, and as they pic up on a particular point, they go speeding down the track blindly, unable to see  or think about anything that is not right in front of them. I find that people in here, or at least in relation to this toopic, have their blinders on, and can't imagine how particular rules in Biblical times worked for that time ONLY. They try to apply rules meant for a particular time to the time we live in now, and they think they are cleavery for doing this. But God through Jesus already noted that rules change over time, but the underlaying priciples of (1) love God and (2) love your follow man, these two trumps all, for example, Jesus in updating old rules said:

Murder(AA)

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a](AB) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry(AC) with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment.(AD) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court.(AE) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.(AF)

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[e](AG) 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(AH) 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble,(AI) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble,(AJ) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f](AK) 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(AL)

Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,(AM) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’(AN) 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:(AO) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;(AP) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.(AQ) 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;(AR) anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[g](AS)

Eye for Eye

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h](AT) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.(AU) 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.(AV)

Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i](AW) and hate your enemy.’(AX) 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(AY) 45 that you may be children(AZ) of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.(BA) 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?(BB) Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(BC)

So. I don't think people can just take an old rule regarding rape and apply it trough out time. The only rules that God made that you apply thoughout time are as I quoted before (1) Love God and (2) Love your fellow man. So if these people in here would take their blinder off they would see that the rule regarding rape was meant to protect the woman, as women in those times weren't the IDNIPENDENT WOMAN of today.

There is also an agnostic, agnostic, who hasn't form an opnion and their stand is they don't know.  My view allows for there to be someone who isn't a theist, but also isn't an atheist.  It would be the fifth category.  In short, the person doesn't have an opinion on the subject.  If one wanted to define everything as just theism or atheism, then you can do that, but I do believe there is a quantifiable category for the person who flat out just doesn't know, and won't say one way or the other.  I was just preferring to have it so that everything wasn't defined via whether or not the person is a theist, which is what your four categories do.

And I will do this, because knowing and believing are nearly inseparately connected, because under all systems of knowing is beliefs about things, or certain levels of trust.  It is just a matter of what one accepts as a valid measure for things.  I know there is a longing to have such a strong piece of information or facts or "truth" that anyone who said to care to accept truth will be forced to do it, but one would be hard pressed to find anything like this.

Under what I describe, you have belief and non-belief towards a lot of things, based upon the degree of confidence you have in that thing being true, real, existing etc... This can happen with not just God, but anything else, like UFOs, ghosts and other paranormal.  Some people can end up deciding they have no decision, and remain neutral.  They can say, flat out, they do not know either way, and claim to be without knowledge (agnostic) in that area.

Exactly, based on the definition of atheism, if you remain neutral (for no belief either way), then you are an atheist. But, there is no universally agreed upon definition of atheism, so I can't really say you're right or wrong. Just know that if someone says they are an atheist, then that doesn't necessarily mean they believe in the nonexistance of a higher being.

As for this:

because knowing and believing are nearly inseparately connected

I disagree. People believe things without knowing all the time. For example, let's say you have a roommate. One day, when you're at the market buying grocerries (sp?), your room-mate calls and says, "Dude, don't buy any milk; I already have some." Most people would believe their roommate in this scenario. And so, they probably wouldn't buy any milk, becuase they believe they would be wasting money. But at the same time, they have no way of knowing if their roommate actually has any milk, at least until they got to the house and saw it with their eyes. They are plenty of scenarios like this where people make actions based on beliefs rather than knowledge.

Yes, it's great that the man is obligated to take care of the woman after he raped her. That's fine and all. I think it's a great rule there to protect the woman.

However, raping is still a horrible act, and the Bible allows it. The bible just says "You can rape a woman, but you gotta take care of her later." Seriously? Do you not see the immoralty with that? Yeah, it's a good rule in place that makes the man take care of the woman. But it still condones raping. It gives men permission to rape, in the first place. So, according to the bible, you can do something as disgusting as rape, as long as you make up for your actions. The rule shouldn't be "You have to take care of the woman you raped." It should say, "Do not rape!"

That's like saying "You can stab someone, but you must pay for their medical billls." Do you not see absurd that is?

When I wrote that I was speaking of the underlying basis by which people end up saying things are facts, and are true.  At the foundation of that is a degree of faith, confidence in trusts and things as authority they agree to submit to in order to believe.  Whether it be one's own senses, one's own reasoning, the word of others, or even the scientific method, at the core is a degree of trust or faith in something by which ones will state something is true or not.  At the core, knowing is still a form of believing, just a must stronger form.  Usually this form is one that is so automatic, you just don't end up thinking it could be incorrect.  Usually, it comes by a habitual frame of mind, with a lot of assumptions and degrees of faith in.  In this regard, they are nearly inseparately connected.
