Anyway, as others have pointed this is kind of a mechanism to protect the woman. Of course it has hideous loopholes and consequences, but it makes sense in the culture it's inserted since any better solution would cause even more problems or need a big shift in the culture itself. Of course all I'm saying is that it makes sense as a cultual guide for that time, which by itself doesn't help the case of an eternal, infallible holy-book, at least not withouth a lot of other mechanisms.

Besides the selection bias other people talked about (as in the vocal atheists are the ones you're gonna notice), it's natural that atheists, on average, would be more argumentative about their "belief" for a few reasons, a good part of which have nothing to do with wanting feel like a badass rebel.
For one, since atheism is not standard, most people who are drawn to it will have a stronger opinion. Granted you'll have more rebel wanabes, but you'll also have (proportionally) more critical people and people who like debating and arguing more. It is of course true that many of these people will have an inflated sense of self-worth (as many hardcore members of any segment of society tend to have), but many won't, being in fact pretty humble.
