Heh, this thread has gone to shit.

Not quite how I would word it but I get the idea. Yeah there will always be someone who complains regardless of how good the mod team becomes, but there's always improvements to be made. 

So long as people are willing to actually say what these problems are in a constructive and helpful manner, the mod team can improve and the site can be even better. If people just come to me and shout and swear and are offensive, then I am less inclined to help and it also makes the site look worse as well. The reason that this thread is here, which isn't the case in a lot of sites, is so we can learn and grow but that can't be done with general attacks at the mod team or individuals in general; but moreso we can see what is good and what is bad; where there's loopholes and where things need improvements. This is all in the OP, ofcourse.

I do hope people find this thread useful, and can see the feedback from both the users and the moderators as well, ofcourse!

let's change the subject in something more interesting, i don't think people should be allowed to come back from a requested perma ban

Hmm, interesting. Sometimes the permaban is requested for family reasons however, sometimes circumstances changes and they wish to return sometimes months or even years after they left. If we didn't let them back, then we wouldn't have Amp here with us for example.

The key thing for me is if someone requests a permaban and/or changes account then their mod history must be preserved as if they were never gone for a day. So if they have a 7 day ban, leave for 2 years, come back and a few days later break the same rule it should be an equally lengthy ban. Same if they were to change their account as well, had we done that then users like Selnor would have been permad a long time ago.

Yeah there's something unavoidably funny about such a post in the mod performance thread!

I keep seeing the notion that Nation threads hold a gang mentality and that the majority of users only stay in that thread... I'd like to see examples please. I mean, there are a few, but it's most certainly not the majority of let's say the Xbox thread. The majority of REGULAR posters who comment in that thread, also comment outside as well.

Gang mentality isn't the correct phrase here IMO; perhaps more "seperate community". When you have a seperate community; you're going to have the people in it defend each other and talk to each other differently than they would elsewhere in the site. You need only look at users like Ryuu, or posts like those over the last hour of so in the thread to see what I mean. Let's take some examples from you. How about this one? Or maybe this one? There's other users as well, this post maybe? Or this? These are just a small, small sample of posts that have nothing to do with Xbox News and, indeed, could be said to be taking a jab at the mod team if you were to be really mean (most of these, not all). Why not moderate them, then? Because to an extent, regardless of what we say or what we do, the nation threads will still be a community. Don't feel bad, I've done it as well. It's not a problem with me if Ryuu wants to stay in the one thread even if I say otherwise. It's his choice and that's OK. But trying to say that it's not a self-seperated community from VGC is wrong.

I mean, what do you want Slade? Do you want me and the other mods to moderate all of these posts for off topic spam and ban people left and right, or would you rather we be a little more leniant with the rules and only clamp down when things are at danger of getting out of hand and well away from any actual discussion like they potentially are here? I'd assume the latter, but who knows.

What I'm more concerned by really is how out of character this post is. We've discussed this countless times before, here and on Skype, explaining what I've said above really. Was I unclear about something? Is there anything which needs clarifying? Not sure who this is directed at but hopefully this will help answer some of your questions and see things from a different perspective. Not everyone likes the Nation threads, after all and these people arguably have legitimate issues with them. It's just...tough to decide what to do. I like them personally when they do foster on topic discussion and when people do post in them to chat about any random game. But when it breaks down into pointless spam and off-topic nonsense, then I can't say I'm a fan of that.
