Matt Cassamassina is a douche. He always just whines about Nintendo's efforts (ever since before n64.com became n64.ign.com). If Nintendo does something awesome, its not awesome enough for him, ever.

Commenting on Matt doesn't really address the good point Matt made.

Carnival Games is set to surpass that. Manhunt 2? I'm not even sure if Wii owners realized it shipped. (It's out, by the way.)

Yeah, and Bozon said it's generally inferior to the first one. In terms of Enemy AI, Story, Violence and Shock Factor. And according to Gamespot, the Wii version was far more censored than the PS2/PSP versions who "Blur" filters were far more subtle and less obtrusive. Also the Wii version was more expensive. Yet it still sold about as well as the PS2 version despite the massive difference in install bases, and higher pricer tag and censored scenes. So neutered niche torture pron games sell about as well on the Wii as they do last generation’s market leader.

Hate when people discount something for the sake of discounting it. We can’t use Resident Evil 4 and Umbrella Chronicles as examples because they’re Resident Evil? What kind of logic is that? So we’re not allowed to site established M-Rated franchises with actual advertising budgets as examples? =P

I’m curious to Matt’s really even giving us the whole story on this alleged title he likes. This is the same man who on his blog claimed that difference between 4:3 and 16:9 was comparable of black and white vs. color picture. How do we know he’s not blowing this out proportions as well?

I think what matt is saiding is just that because some mature game with minimum effort do not sell well, publisher do not dare to take up mature game for wii. Publisher are saying that RE4 and RE:UC sell well because of name.

So what he suggest is that nintendo shall create an original mature ip for wii that will prove to publisher that mature game can sell on wii.

The fact that he believe an original mature ip will be able to show publisher that they is a market for mature game in wii prove that he believe good mature game can sell. Futhermore, he is telling nintendo to take up these game.

So basically he is just saying that publisher should be more daring to try new things and the things he talk about are just some example of what publisher seen. Dont know why this topic become a topic on mature game cant sell on wii when it is talking about publisher not daring to take up good mature game for wii.

like ive said there needs to be more advertising for the games,so far there not they think that just because the user base is huge the game will sell, well there wrong

tag:"reviews only matter for the real hardcore gamer"

3rd-party games on the Wii will succeed - but it may take a couple of years before its fully established.

Many of the early adopters are either Ninty fans (who primarily buy Ninty titles) or casuals (buying it for WiiSports).

The "average" gamer is only just starting to buy into the Wii - so the effective install base for these gamers is only 25% (or so) of the overall install base. This % will slowly rise, and this coupled with a largely increasing overall install base - there will be a lot more "normal" gamers who own a Wii, and willing to head out and buy "typical" 3rd-party titles.

As long as the Wii gets inferior versions (i.e. disproportinate) this won't change either.

RE4 was a good start, but even that was a budget port.

PES, Star Wars, GTA, Monster Hunter, FF:CC, Brawl - they will be the games that get "gamers" purchasing a Wii, and potentially putting away their PS2 for good.

It would have been interesting to see how a full budget CoD4 on the Wii would have done! Same applies to Assassins...

Can we PLEASE stop saying this is about 3rd parties? It's about MATURE titles - he even makes his point by comparing 3rd party Carnival Games to 1st party Metroid Prime!

Now, let's take a gander at those mature titles:

Red Steel - 1,000,000+
Resident Evil 4 - 1,000,000+
Resident Evil UC - 740,000
Metroid Prime - 500,000+
Manhunt 2 - 150,000+
Medal of Honor 2 - 120,000+
Soul Caliber Legends - 90,000
Scarface- under 100,000

No More Heroes - TBD

I think these are the "major" or "quality" releases - ignoring some of the shovelware like CoD3, or MoHV.

So of 8 titles, 2 are million sellers, a third well on it's way, and at least one other is profitable. That looks pretty good to me.

Red Steel - OK, weak reviews, but fans geek on the idea of Wii swords. Does anyone think this desire has abated one bit? If anything, we are waiting for a "Red Steel" that is done right.

Resident Evil? Sure, it's got a bankable name, but that never helped RE:Remake or RE: Zero. Is it the name that's selling, or the reviews?

MP3? Sales are comparable to MP2. Could it be this is the base market for this franchise? And can I say this is one of the tamest "mature" titles I can recall, so using it as basis for this argument seems week to me.

ManHunt 2? Sales are comparable to the PS2 (190,000), reviews were modest, and the controversy kept it out of many stores. Given how far this pushes the envelope (or at least did before being edited - something that surely didn't help sell it to interested gamers), I'm not sure it would have done much better with stellar reviews.

Medal of Honor 2 Heroes? OK, this title (reportedly) deserves better. But it was practically snuck onto store shelves, and sits in a glut of other WW2 shooters. It has sold only on the strength of it's word of mouth. Given the beating the MoH series has taken over some of its weaker titles, I think this is respectable, and likely will be profitable.

Soul Caliber Legends? Did we learn nothing from Mortal Kombat: Sub Zero? If you have to make a game like this, at least make it good. But the reality is SC fans want another fighting game, not a hurried adventure game trying to cash in on the Wiisplosion. I think it's selling as it deserves.

Scarface? Released over 6 months after versions on other consoles.

No More Heroes? Way premature to render any verdict on this title. Talk to me after it's hit US and EU shelves.

Conclusion? Inconclusive. Quality titles can be found up and down the chart, as can mediocre games. Same with IPs - RE sold, but ManHunt, Soul Caliber and Metroid failed to compete with Red Steel.

What I think it clear is that the 3 best sellers all have a clear hook to bring in gamers - Red Steel's sword play, RE4's legacy and cheap price, REUC as the first "gun game" in ages- while most of the others don't have much to distinguish them from the crowd (save Manhunt 2, who's selling point is also it's Achilles heel). Let's see a few more ambitious, high quality efforts, and then we can start to see if there's a real pattern emerging.

I'm not out to say that Wii is the bastion of third party success, but you have to put those titles in perspective. Killer 7 came out on both the Gamecube and PS2, and how much backing did either company really give the title? Across two platforms it did not sell well in relation to the burden put on it by the hardcore. And (whether or not you can argue that Zach and Wiki plays into the toy persona that people like Wada have helped facilitate) I think that Zach and Wiki certainly falls into the Psychonauts syndrome. At least Psychonauts had a multi million dollar ad campaign. I dont think Zach and Wiki had anything. I'd really like to see Capcom's projections for the game and what it actually sold.

Ubisoft at the start of the Wii's life cycle at least had the right idea. Take Red Steel. Mass marketable idea (guns and sword play). It promised something. Whether it delivered on those promises or not is up for debate, but it promised something. And when Ubi could have allowed it to get overshadowed by Zelda and Wii Sports, they actually built up a decent campaign for it. You could argue that Nintendo featured it prominently, but that wouldn't explain Rayman Raving Rabids either, which sold nearly as much. Speaking of which, is RRR2 even out yet? Ubi really dropped the ball with that one.

I know that's not what people want to hear, that not all good concepts are marketable. It's not always about marketing. It's about marketability. But the main problem here is that every damned third party game has to be some sort of barometer for success on the Wii. And that's just too much for some of these games to bear, especially with a million mitigating factors that can be argued over and over. I am not going to say that the Wii is the perfect environment for third parties. I'm certainly not going to say that Nintendo's own efforts don't overshadow third party games to some degree. But the talk is annoying. Either put your games on the Wii and give that game the maximum effort to succeed, or just don't bother at all. The market will ultimately bear out it out. The only problem is the risk aversive attitude. But if the 360 and PS3 are good enough environments for certain companies, then they can continue along that plan. I don't think all companies can ignore the Wii's expanding userbase forever, though.

Both XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 have had extremely big flops on theri systems. Where are thee editorials on them? The media just places "upswing" on those consoles while trying to downplay Wii success.

Same thing was done with PS vs DS. This is history repeating itself and extremely old news to most Nintendo fans.

I agree with you, and like some one said earlier it seems everybody is blaming Nintendo, for the third parties not selling, especially when the Wii is not the only console suffering this problem.

Actually I see his point. With the PS3's current userbase its expected that some games will flop hard. With the Wii it isnt but some games doesnt sell well at all. Look at RRR 2, it isnt selling as well as expected for a bigger user base then the original RRR had. Yet anything that has massive bright colors with Nintendo printed as the publisher sells well, notice I said bright colors as Metroid doesnt have half the bright colors as Mario Party, SMG, etc etc let along the Wii titled games. Maybe Metroid 3's title should be changed to Metroid 3 Wii and third parties should put Wii in the titles. Need for Speed Wii , Madden 09 Wii, Wii Okami.

Only this game are in the top 50:

33 Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Activision 11 35,834 1,292,792
46 Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles Capcom 9 26,674 742,992

The Wii isn't the perfect console for third party.
If you want third party game like Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire, The Golden Compass, NFL Tour, Super Rub-A-Dub, go buy a PS3.
If you want Mario Galaxy, Ocarina of Time (VC), SSBB, Pikmin 2, Metroid 3, buy a Wii.

Wii Fit is rapidly beating PS3...

Playing now: Apollo Justice, Majora's Mask

Going to play: Little King Story

but this is a very big amount of troll there. Do not do that again. Each console has piss-poor titles.
