Normally I never buy any of those Mad Catz type accessories for any system, but I was kinda thinking something like this could be really a big demand for the Wii U ... 

Would it be possibly for an accessory company to create a "signal bouncer/extender" for the Wii U? Meaning something that effectively takes the Wii U's wireless video signal and expands the range of it so you could for example play all over your house with a Wii U pad, or at least in a wider range? 

Anyone familiar with wireless signal tech think it would be feasible. I was thinking maybe it'd be something where the transmitter plugs into the Wii U USB port or into a nearby wall socket and then the "reciever" can be plugged into another wall socket further away or something and that "bounces" the signal to the Wii U pad. 

If this was possible without a ton of lag it's something I think a lot of Wii U owners would pick up.

It depends on what wireless connection type they will be using for the gamepad, if they are using the standard IEEE 802.11n there are already devices that do what you describe.

You will also have to wait for reports on real life performance of the connections range and strength. Obviously those depend on many factors such as building type (flat/house), wall/celling materials (wood/steel/concrete), signal saturation, etc. Depending where you live you will have a better or worse performance, and might not even need an extender.

I don't think they will use 802.11n, the most probable thing is a proprietary protocol in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands, as they are the free to use ones. Something similar to most wireless keyboards, they use 2.4 GHz but not any of the IEEE standards.



Yeah the UPad signal won't be wireless-n (or b or g) because it could interfere with other wireless-n signals (including the Wii U's own that it will use for connecting to the internet.

The Wii remotes use a bluetooth wavelength don't they? so it'll probably be that (Works from everywhere in my house already... though houses are small in Britain, I don't think I can be more than 7 metres from the Wii without going outside)

Bluetooth works at 2.4, as DECT, but I'm sure that it won't be bluetooth, as it doesn't have enough bandwidth (3.0 uses 802.11 as a high throughput mode, so it isn't per se Bluetooth in this mode)

There is the alternative that is Wireless HDMI (it isn't a standard but various implementations incompatible between them) in the 5, 60 or 190 GHz frequencies, but I don't think they would like to use anything >2.4 GHz, as the range suffers immensely, and the concrete and wooden penetration is almost null on the >5 GHz bands, and really poor on 5 GHz.

There aren't any worldwide free ISM bands under 2.4 GHz with the necessary throughput, so i'm almost sure that it will work in 2.4 GHz.

Really have to know what Nintendo is using first of all. If you take into account rumors and talks where its sounds like Nintendo intends on you being able to play on the tablet in all areas of house, it probably isn't bluetooth. However, there could be too much interference with ordinary wifi-n or similar. After all that's what is coming built-in for normal internet connections.

It has to be something proprietary that is similar to wifi-n to give you the range and data capacity that the tablet is sure to utilize. Hell it may just piggy back on your existing wireless network; for better or worse. (granted if you're connected via LAN then its own wireless-n would be the router and only connecting point)
