Yeah the UPad signal won't be wireless-n (or b or g) because it could interfere with other wireless-n signals (including the Wii U's own that it will use for connecting to the internet.
The Wii remotes use a bluetooth wavelength don't they? so it'll probably be that (Works from everywhere in my house already... though houses are small in Britain, I don't think I can be more than 7 metres from the Wii without going outside)
