A survey conducted on a such short period of time is meaningless, especially with no big releases on Sony's systems. I look forward the same survey the week Tales of Xillia 2 releases.

If marketshare was calculated year to date it would still be heavily skewed toward Nintendo.  Of course, if you cherrypick one specific week when Xillia 2 releases, like the week in question here, the graph would skew in Sony's direction a bit.  The best metric is YTD and Nintendo would surely have the majority of the market.

Well, being VGchartz it's easy enough to check.  PSP should help out Sony a lot on the YTD though being a bit of a confounding variable looking foward.

http://www.vgchartz.com/yearly/2012/Japan/

Platform Yearly (change) Total
3DS 2,851,225 (-34%)
PS3 737,672 (-52%)
PSP 524,354 (-74%)
PSV 432,390 (-1%)
Wii 355,170 (-59%)
DS 53,386 (-92%)
X360 42,202 (-63%)
Total 4,996,399(-50%)

Nintendo marketshare for the Year - 65.2%

Sony Market Share - 33.9%

So, yeah, pretty heavy in Nintendo's favor, and not looking great for Sony considering the PSV doesn't seem to quite be the PSP to put it gently.

Without the 3DS, sony would have alot more market share. Nintendo and sony would probably be similiar when it comes to marketshare

I don't get your point... the 3DS is a product that will keep selling.

Unlike the PSP, which is falling off.

If the 3DS was not out yet, Nintendo's sales would not be as high. I don't think the DS would be selling like that, if the 3DS still was not out yet. The 3DS takes up alot of marketshare on it's own, taking over HALF of consoles sold in japan, according to your graph. So the market would be alot smaller without the 3DS

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Can't really deduct the 3DS from the equation just because it is the only console not failing in Japan... Sony has a new handheld out too, it's not Nintendo's fault it isn't a success.

Not saying it's a bad thing though, the 3DS is a great handheld. In Japan at least, the sales are saying something, new consoles need to come out. The 3DS is a success because it is new, while people that wanted the other systems, probably got them already.

Cleverly what Nintendo has done is two have to versions of the same system, in the 3DS and 3DS XL, available for consumers. While the PSP and Vita are cannibalising each others market share, never mind having to compete against the 3DS. Plus, because the Vita is seen as a handheld PS3, its sales are further cannibalised by the PS3!

Nintendo just has to sit back and collect the market share, 70% and counting.

To tell you the truth I think the Wii U is more a western friendly console. Most of the games will be geared towards that and the 3DS will continue to thrive in Japan. I doubt most of the third parties will sell the best on the Wii U though.

September 13th.  They'll have plenty for the Japanese market.  Remember, we don't know anything about the Wii U yet.  If not in NY, then Japan will have it's own show.  If anything, Nintendo is going to want Wii U to do great in Japan given how strong the yen is vs. the dollar.

Nintendo has the Wii U version of Dragon Quest X in its corner... and that's about it as far as we know. Supposedly Capcom is going to announce their first Wii U game soon.

They sell because Nintendo released the same thing multiple times and for some reason, people just bought it. It's similiar to Apple, where they release an iPhone and sell really well, and then a new one comes out next year, and it does just as well. It's a quite clever tactic from both companies. It's something sony isn't able to do

PSone, PS2slim, PSP 1000-4000 & Go, and PS3 is supposedly about to have it's third major revision (well, ignoring the early model differences like taking out the emotion engine)

I'd say Sony is better than Nintendo with selling the same thing twice for home consoles... They don't seem to have managed the same kind of success for PSP though.

For DS I think the DS-lite and DSi models were a good idea, I wouldn't say they were milking it like Apple is. I will agree I think the 3DSXL is a little early, but ultimately it is not meant to be a replacement model like the others, but is a larger option model (I still don't see the appeal of the XL or the DSiLL models over the smaller versions myself, to me it makes them less portable with little other advantages, but they still aren't really replacements)

Im sure they will with time. I haven't seen much that would be huge in the west thus far. I think the west will majorly harness what the Wii U has to offer.

What i'm saying is that Nintendo and Apple are able to re-release something and make it sell very well, while Sony seems to struggle to do that
