So then. When a PC game sells 1 million. That means it's had a player base of around 95 million.

AMAZING!

He either must have been misquoted, misspoke... or think people are idiots.

All of the above. They do a great E3 conference and follow up with this stuff.

With everyone wanting to get exclusively in bed with F2P and ditch paid products entirely...

I'm wondering, how would a F2P model work in a single-player game? (In an effective manner).

first of all i don't really believe that, i don't believe a game like the witcher 2 which got very often pirated got pirated like 30 million times or more (no clue how many bought it). and even if, that doesn't mean that they would have sold that instead, i think if pirating wouldn't be possible sales would be higher but not by much.

as long as you can still make money with that as developer, you shouldn't avoid the market (like benvtrigger would do as developer). if you don't make money with it anymore, you should.

maybe these high numbers are real if you count india, china, south american countries and such but almost none of them would buy the game instead without the possibility to pirate.

one more probem is, we still don't have many f2p games, if we will have 20x as much as we have nowadays, do developers think they all will still get as much customers as they have right now with only a few f2p games on the market so people donät have a lot of different games to choose?

Ubisoft's games are going to be pirated more than the norm; even legitimate buyers often pirate Ubisoft's games for the sake of having a copy without draconian DRM.

So these statistics say that if 100 people played a game that 95 of them pirated it? I find that hard to believe. Look on the pirate bay even the most popular torrents only get a few 10's of thousands whilst the real game sells millions.

Actually, the math is 20 million install base for 1 million sales based upon 95% piracy.

Well i can think of a few ways.

1) Auction houses like Diablo 3

2) Free game, paid server based DLC/items/content

3) Premium Classes

4) Pay for cheats

5) Kickstarter like meter for new content updates.   Like this game?  Want to see more of it?   Help by donating.

Oh yeah duh.  Early in the morning.  Still a ridiculious figure.

Oh my god. How arrogant can the gamers get these days.

Are there actual gamers on forums calling this guy a liar????

Hell gamers now think they own everything. Its a sad day to be classed in the bracket of a gamer. The attitudes of them are ridiculous.

I don't really care what someone is gona reply to this.

The guy knows what hes talking about. PC gaming is loaded with Piracy. I don't know anyone that pays for a PC game. I hate them for it but I understand. In the end PC Piracy I totally believe is in the millions for most games.

I remember on thepiratebay PC game Settlers 4 had been downloaded 3.6 million times. Now teres noway anyone would tell me settlers 4 is an uber seller on PC in the past.

If it is free thaats not that hard to see.

Look at PS2 sales.

Windows 7 has sold over 1 billion.

That would be less than 10% of W7 users. Then theres the rest who still use Windows Vista and Widows Xp.

So that figure probably comes down to 95 million being around 4-5% sales of its entire userbase.

MW3 sells about 22% of the pS3 userbase per iteration.
