Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo myths that need to die: Virtual Console edition

I like to fortify your first claim about the DK64 myth in that DK Country (and the last two games) contradicts that statement all together; so it's a nonsensical argument. If they were able to release the game that made the franchise successful in the first place, then whats stopping them from releasing the N64 title?

In fact they retained the entire opening sequence (in DKC) when you boot up the game (the RARE logo is still there)

Donkey Kong made DK famous not DKC.  DKC only continued the franchise success.  Rare only helped the franchise alone during the 16 bit era.

The best part about this thread was the Yoshi's Island screen. Man I love the sprite work.

I agree with the main sentiment. I do wish more games made console. With all those consoles the service supported, we should of gotten at least 5 games a week ... not a measly 2 or sometimes 3

Or sometimes 0.  They neglected the VC but after I neglected for so long I was surprised last time loggin on to the Wii Shop channel at what they added.  I believe I saw the addition of Double Dragon 2 (NES) which actually had co op.  There are still a few titles to pick up but they pretty much dropped the ball on the VC on Wii.  Like the Arcade section should at least have a few 90s arcade games (not just 80s).  The 90s was the last good decade for arcades and I was surprised to see that even the PSN had X-Men (arcade game) for 10 dollars.  Now that is the type of arcade game I would like.

I check most weeks (not to buy games though) and yes it is pretty much dead now... Here in Europe there are probably about three games released every month for Wiiware & VC combined. Whereas back in 2008 it was rare there were usually three or four games a week.

The only Nintendo myth that needs to die is the re occuring Nintendo is Doomed myth.

Not really; Donkey Kong Country was way bigger than any previous Donkey Kong game; at the time of its release, it was the second highest selling game of all time (excluding bundles). I don't think many gamers of the 16-bit era had much more than heard about Donkey Kong before Donkey Kong Country.

For me the simple reason why they did release a lot of average games with a gem inbetween is the following.

You create the VC service and want people to buy as many different games as possible. If you give them everything at the same time. They will buy the games they KNOW are good and thats it.

If you make the good games RARE people are more willing to spend their money on less known games.

its a bit like the 3ds launch. Dont give them really good Nintendo games, so people will likely try out something else. And they did. It was not uber successful but to an extend it worked.

For me the bigger Issue with the VC is the crappy quality of the games (slow 50hz games, black borders, sound stuttering with sega games, pal games forcing you to use 576i instead of 480p etc.etc.etc.)
and the high price for really old games especially in europe.
