Donkey Kong made DK famous not DKC. DKC only continued the franchise success. Rare only helped the franchise alone during the 16 bit era.

Not really; Donkey Kong Country was way bigger than any previous Donkey Kong game; at the time of its release, it was the second highest selling game of all time (excluding bundles). I don't think many gamers of the 16-bit era had much more than heard about Donkey Kong before Donkey Kong Country.
