In fact they retained the entire opening sequence (in DKC) when you boot up the game (the RARE logo is still there)

Donkey Kong made DK famous not DKC.  DKC only continued the franchise success.  Rare only helped the franchise alone during the 16 bit era. 

Not really; Donkey Kong Country was way bigger than any previous Donkey Kong game; at the time of its release, it was the second highest selling game of all time (excluding bundles). I don't think many gamers of the 16-bit era had much more than heard about Donkey Kong before Donkey Kong Country.
