Yes it is, hope it's still on warranty. Those things are hard to come across

PSV is better because it's selling worldwide unlike the dreamcast which mean Sony is winning over Sega, also the PSV is already the second best selling handheld this gen which isn't a small feat. |

You'll punch me, but I still say MH is going to be announced for Vita in Japan this TGS. Very 3DS-esque scenario: a quick cash-in and a future exclusive version. |
I agree, I've actually said as much before. Games take a while to develop; there's probably high profile games that have been in the pipeline for a while but which we don't know about yet. MHP4th on Vita wouldn't surprise me.

Well yes, the sales tracking can be off especially for older games, but there isn't any viewable sales tracking on here for any non 7th gen games or consoles except for the PS2 hardware on that total's page.... the other figures I mentioned (PS1, DC, Saturn) are not wrong due to poor tracking but some kind of input mistake (they are meant to be final shipment figures). |
I don't know. Weekly sales were tracked for ages now in Japan (since early 1990's?) as opposed to the recent attempts in US and Europe less than a decade ago. Shouldn't final shipments and sales published by say Famitsu be practically the same?

If you were talking about a next generation console with processing power far beyond existing and emerging platforms this would be valid; after all, had developers had to drop the PS3 in 2007 to focus on the Wii they would have "lost" a large portion of their work. With the PS-Vita they can port to the XBox 360, PS3, PC, Wii U, and (probably within 12 to 18 months) smartphones with very minimal lost effort.
Certainly, there would be some work lost and not all games would be viable for every platform, but in many cases it would make sense to port the game to other platforms to increase the total userbase by 10 to 100 times.

True, but I think the real PSP fans will get a Vita eventually. So the question is, how many true PSP fans are there? If much of that 74 million in PSP sales is a soft market then Vita's problems are going to deepen. I think Vita might be faced with GameCube level unsuccess. That was the true core of Nintendo fans, and I think the true core of PSP fans is probably at, or slightly below, GameCube levels. Whether Vita can convince many people outside that core to buy is very much in doubt. Personally I think Sony should sell a PSP clip on unit for Playstation mobile certified smartphones that gives you the analog sticks and buttons you want for that really good portable experience, but that you can put away for when all you want is the touch screen experience or to simply use it as a phone. Yep, I think Vita should be Sony's last dedicated handheld. And it probably will be. |
The problem is that the change in format and the lack of backward compatabilty/transferabilty makes all the PSP users free agents. In other words, they will have to leave all their old games behind if they upgrade, so they either don't or wait or don't necessarily stay with the same brand.
Meanwhile, Nintendo handhelds have always started with b/c. The GBA played GB/GBC. The DS played GBA. The 3DS plays DS. You don't lose your library at upgrade. It may slow some new software sales, but it creates install base and Nintendo has generally made profits on hardware (except for the 3DS from the pricedrop until recenlty) So it has been a sound startegy.
Nintendo has even started to follow that with consoles -- Wii played GC. WiiU will play Wii.
Sony did that with consoles too -- especially PS2 playing PS1. But it abandoned it quickly with the PS3 b/c to the PS2. It has not done that with handheleds (PSV does not play PSP).
Meanwhile, for the record, Microsoft has required software for b/c.

Well like I said, as the Saturn figure for Japan seems correct as I remember it being in the past here on VGC, you could be right about DC Japan... All I know is the figures on that page are meant to be final shipment figures for dead consoles, and as the final shipment figure for DC is 10.6 million, (which I don't think ever included a regional breakdown) there is definately something amiss. Perhaps without a regional breakdown ioi estimated the region shipments based on older data (occasional news snippets about the DC, or in Japan's case famitsu sales data) which probably does mean the Japan figure is nearest the truth.
All I know is there are definately a few misplaced figures on that page. PS1 being the most obvious as Sony's final shipment figure is less than that on here.

Thread title changed to a less misleading one. Blame the source not me...
Well now the sales doesn't look that bad XD
