This holiday will prove if the Vita is will rise or sink.

I hope its the former, Nintendo needs the competation.

Why exactly does Nintendo need competition? The GameBoy Advance essentially had a market to itself, and still had great 1st and 3rd party offerings.

Competition yields even better results than a monoply.

Basil is right, nintendo needs competition.

Not only to force them to make better games, but because nintendo already show to us how they can be lazy sometimes.

i dont think it is doomed.... it already outsold Nokia NGage for fuck sake!

Go dreacmcast, GO!!

I don't think CoD and AC will save the console.  These two games are better on home consoles.  I think the Vita will sell at a 10k/week pace until a price drop occur.  Many people are holding off because of the price.  But it also needs more games.  New original IPs dedicated to the handheld market, just like Gravity Rush.  Releasing PS3 ports or home console games' spinoffs won't sell the system.

If the Vita doesn't have 4M units sold by the end of the year, it's pretty much doomed.  By that time, the 3DS will already be 25-30M units sold.

You know, when I said the Vita was DoA on this site, so many people were bitching at me, sigh..... When will people understand that Sony marketing is just that bad and I'm not against Sony? I have a lot of Sony shit right in my room including my TV and the PS3 and a shit ton of games sigh............... But yeah, they need to do a straight up bundle that includes the memory card at the price of 200 bucks with some interesting games and actually market it right or they are really going to be fucked hard.

Sony is doomed.

I doubt it. The PlayStation brand is still strong throughout much of the world, and they have some powerful IPs. But the Vita is in severe trouble.

That said, if the 3DS could thrive today despite having about 3 good games for half a year, the Vita can pull itself out of its current troubles.

However, it is evident that the PS brand has experinced an exponential decline with new competitors.

Yay!!!

when you think about how good the DC was this is really good news for Sony, the PSV might even outsell the N64 and gamecube

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

The Vita is a disaster for Sony that's only going to get worse. It's going to be very difficult for Sony to find dedicated 3rd party support for a fading system in the advent of upcoming next gen systems like Wii U, X720, and PS4. The risk also is higher to develop for compared to Nintendo's established 3DS system. Another thing to consider is there are added competition coming for Apple, Tablets, and smartphones. I believe Sony should look at the bigger picture and drop the system to concentrate it's effort on the upcoming console wars between X720 and it's PS4 (which should be launching very close to each other).

Huh??? How so? Vita sales are now 2.7 million. Dreamcast topped out at 2.25 million in Japan.

The platform total's page on VGC is wrong for some reason... not sure how much more DC may have sold in Japan but the console shipped 10.6 million in total (2.4m more than VGC world total). Similarly PS1 only shipped 102.49 million, yet on that page it is at 104.25 million, and the Sega Saturn shipped 9.5 million (i think, as I remember something about 13 million as well, but that might just be Sega Master System), not 8.82 million.

Yeah, that's true. Some VGC numbers for older console are off (Games as well), but not for Japan. Tracking sales in Japan is much more accurate than other regions considering we have both Famitsu and Media Create. VGC numbers should be accurate for Japan. Those missing sales should be from the other markets (mostly from developing countries).

Well yes, the sales tracking can be off especially for older games, but there isn't any viewable sales tracking on here for any non 7th gen games or consoles except for the PS2 hardware on that total's page.... the other figures I mentioned (PS1, DC, Saturn) are not wrong due to poor tracking but some kind of input mistake (they are meant to be final shipment figures).
It's possible you are correct about the Japan figure being right for DC, because the Saturn figure for Japan definately seems correct compared to my memory (I remember being suprised it beat the N64) but if 2.25m is correct it's not due to the accuracy of sales tracking.
