Don't be ridiculous. Nintendo would never release such a low-quality product. I KID. Really, the quality of a console should be determined by its software. I sigh every time someone says that the Vita is "a really great piece of hardware." As a video game console, that means nothing if there aren't enough good games to back it up. Vita is new and it's still building its library, but it is far from a high-quality product while it has such a small selection of software to choose from. PS Classics support will help. The 3DS is not the greatest handheld of all time, but it's getting there (1). Full backwards compatibility with all DS games (excepting the ones that used the GBA port), a dozen or so very high-quality retail games, at least as many classics available on the Virtual Console, and a solid half-dozen great eShop games. Eventually, the 3DS will have its own library, the DS's library, and (through VC) a large chunk of most of the notable games from the GB/GBC library, plus some NES games for some reason.
(2) Hm. Without even looking I can tell you that both Rayman Origins and Wreck-It Ralph are also coming to 3DS before the end of the year. Your source is lacking information. LEGO City Stories and Scribblenauts Unlimited are probably coming out this year, too. Those four bring 3DS's total to 8, to match your Vita list. Now if only there was a high-profile DS game coming out this October... |
(1) 3DS is still far for being as good as DS or PSP were, and the upcoming line-up doesn't seem impressive. We might learn more at TGS though...
(2) Rayman Origins is available (at least here in Europe) and what is Wreck-it Ralph? Is that a high-profile 3DS game? A DS game is not a 3DS game, it can't count. And btw I forgot Persona 4 and Lost Odyssey...
Tbh I don't think it will make a difference. 3DS will probably sell a lot more than Vita during that period. At best, Vita's sales will recover thanks to the new games but that's about it... Next year will be decisive : Sony must come up with something big a TGS to counter MH4 or else Vita will never catch up.

What is appalling is that the guys who rate games also take money from publishers to avertise them. This kind of conflict of interests would be unthinkable in any other media/industry. CoD keeps getting 8.5 or 9 out of 10 despite lower quality every year, it's just revolting.

lol. Vita doesn't have a chance in hell of catching up to 3DS.

If third parties progressively switch from 3DS to Vita it has a chance (a slim one, but still). Western publishers are at work on Vita but not so much on 3DS (it's not sure whether they will keep developing on Vita too though...) but in Japan only SEGA and Falcom really support Vita. That's why TGS is crucial.
The Vita is a nice piece of hardware, but really the software a device like that needs to sell comes from the one company it can't get any games from -- Nintendo.
Nintendo and Sony together could maybe make this thing fly.
The other thing I think people overlook is the thing just isn't very portable. It's the size of a freaking brick and totally takes up an entire pocket, and unfortunately for Sony, baggy XXXL jeans went out of style a few years ago.
The DS XL is the same size but it's an *optional* model, not the main model. If you could only get the 3DS in the XL size, I think that would be another knock on its sales too.
