For me, I am having a feeling that this is going on with me:
How does it stop? That is what I am trying to figure out.

Things are getting bad in this country. This is what he or she is talking about. There's no jobs and prices are going up. Thats why I love video games. They can put you in a world where you can forget about that crap in your daily life for alittle while. I have no advice for this person but have heard people down south do fair better somewhat. The grass is always greener on the otherside.

I started a non-profit in NY state in order to get work I could do. I signed up also at a local volunteer bank, almost never does anything come in. What I need now is paid work, or something to make a difference. Since 2007, I have been doing an excess of unpaid work.
The problem I see is government and business should be separate as it feels the relationship is symbiotic.
Capitalism mindset should be reworked also. It's not working anymore. It worked once if and when there was enough to capitalize for, but businesses have gone with outsourcing and other means. I'm all for what-I-worked-for but businesses have influenced the government decisions..., but that doesn't mean the govt is without fault. They also need to rework a now broken system that applies to what we need now:. that includes welfare, SSI, Disability Insurance, General Assistance, etc.
You should have taken the Wendy's job as others have said. However, others haven't really said why you should have. It shows an employer character when you do what you have to do to stay afloat. Why would they hire a welfare queen with an MSIS when they could get one who was flipping burgers for a year? It shows character. You clearly have none. You get online and whine about your situation rather than going out and doing something about it. Sure there are lots of low paying jobs out there, and that sucks. But taking one to spare the taxpayers your mooching and trying to improve yourself in some way is sure better than sitting around doing nothing.
For the record I supported Bunning's filibuster. Let's force the takers to work crap jobs while they find something better instead of sitting around feeling like they are "better than that."
I'll send you a PM as we have openings. Not sure if you are willing to relocate. I won't be assisting you with a reference though.

I am in my 40s, ended up getting honorable discharged from the U.S Army after failing to get out of training and I broke my wrist which pushed it from uncharacterised to honorable due to delays. The label is "Unsuitable for military life" and thus no way EVER I end up in the military. Even the Peace Corp is out again, due to issues with acid reflux. And also trying to look into retail. Due to issues with my back, I am not getting clearance from a doctor to cover lifting. So, anything retail is right out. This means also I am not in a place where I can even land a manager trainee position working retail, eventhough I have a really good conversation with a regional manager, who said to call back when I get clearance. I have sent a large number of resumes out, and still have tried that. My last hurrah here is part-time phone survey work, if I land that. Pretty much I am going to set an October window for deciding to pull the plug and hit rock bottom, after I get the doctor's appointment in. Maybe things break, if not, it is lose everything, like my car (unable to keep it up) and also my bank account (not able to afford to keep making credit card payments. At that point it is go destitute, and try to live on $100 a month, without a bank account, on the government dole. Then take like 5 years to get things built up to where I could possibly get a car again. My take is, better to do it soon, rather than later, because around 50, I may have a shot at getting something. 55+ it is end game, because really pushing too old. Anyone can step in to help would be good, but I don't expect anyone to do anything, outside of "bummer man". Well, all this happens, I delete my account here, and purge a lot and just vanish. Some people wouldn't mind this, because at least it is one less thing to shatter their worldview. |
Have you sought Social Security Insurance (SSI)? I would think with your doctor saying you're unable to work that would at least allow you to receive some disability. Though once you obtained a job you would need to go off it and some employers may take issue with it.

What Wendy's job? I said I would of taken a Wendy's job, if it is available. Reality is that there wasn't one. Of course, you don't see this. What I did was that I ended up contact the regional manager of Wendy's in response for work, looking for something, and he ended up saying he wanted someone with quick service experience.
Again, there was no Wendy's job. And your ranting is fine... if you aren't looking at an actually unemployment rate of around 20%. I am up for doing anything now. And your Welfare Queen comment goes WAY beyond insulting. It shows a total disconnect with reality. Such a person doesn't exist. If they do exist, it would be as someone engaging in mass fraud with the welfare system...

I should also particularly emphasis you being clueless here, because I did accept a part-time janitor position, only to lose it because of my back. I was sent home actually and it got worse and I had to resign. So, I suggest you take your cluelessness and stuff it.

I do not qualify. I have neither a bad enough back issue, particularly now, that the government says that I can't do phone tech support. And my depression issues aren't bad enough either. It isn't something I would want to be in either. In my case of the Walletpop article, the unemployment did run out. I had an option to either not return, plead full destitution and lose all, or go back into the bad environment I am in, so I could have a shot at work. I decided to do the later. Now, if things continue, I will need to consider it.

I have a feeling if things break wrong for me, and I end up losing where I am staying now, and word got on here, I have a feeling I might get some "That sucks man" but would I really get any help? I could get some inane spin how voting Obama out would magically make things better, but really folks? I could also send resume somewhere, but would it translate into a job? I am at a place where I am not sure what else to do, and running out of options. Anyone have answers? I will take a lack of resolution as a no, and believe anyone else who begins to think people on the Internet like this are really friends for you, needs to rethink what the Internet is. Anyhow, anyone have any help? Hey, feel free to send me a message. As it is now, I would love to be proven wrong, but I am not expecting anything. Still doesn't mean I can't use some help. |
Unlike you, I have fallen through the cracks.
While my situation wasn't the same as yours, I was terminated from my employer then I ended up with a bad reference that killed my best opportunity for a job. Then, I became the primary care giver for my terminally ill father. After about three years I attempted to get back into the workforce but three years had passed and no one was giving me the time of day. I continued to try to become gainfully employed, but few companies ever contacted me. I did some work on the side for money, but not enough to sustain me.
In August I lost my housing, not because I didn't have money or couldn't afford it, but my landlord decided that they no longer wanted to rent their house to anyone (it's a second home they had bought for a similar purpose). The timing could not be worse as college students are returning and either people are looking for college students, people who can show employment, or people willing or capable of signing at least a 6 month lease.
Physically, I'm in a similar situation as you are. I have alignment issues that either cause problems in my back or in my legs and feet. Unlike your situation, my doctor informed me that my situation wasn't a disability due to the fact that it isn't permanent. The problem is I can't stay on my feet for very long, and I have to be careful about sitting for long periods of time. The latter however is more workable than the former.
I have a large family, 6 siblings, but for various reason no one can help me. So I live in my car now.
What I recommend is proactively seek out a safety net before you find yourself in a bad situation. Don't be afraid to live in room, rather than an apartment as you'll save yourself a lot of money (check craigslist). Consider obtaining a student loan and going back to school for additional education. You're currently not eligible for food stamps, but when you do move out you may be. It may depend on your state and the current unemployment in your state.
What specifically is wrong with your back? Depending on what is wrong, a chiropractor may be able to assist you. I was once bent over in a C due to a bulging disc, and with the help of a chiropractor am in better shape than I was more than a decade ago. You may not obtain permanent relief, but you may be able to function better with routine manipulations.
Hope some of this helps.
Im sorry but having read the article are we meant to feel sorry for you? You have not worked for 3 years and have claimed over 30k in benfits. Geez.
