Yet they pocket 77% of mobile profit share with that market share. So depends how you look at getting "hammered".

Good point. It's not just about the market share, it's about the profit. It's a no brainer that a free OS on phones you can get for free will attract the most manufacturers and customers. Android doesn't make Google any money which is a shame.

It's a bit like saying Toyota hammers Daimler in car sales without pointing out that Toyota makes half of the profits of Daimler.

So yeah, I suppose it's right to Android is hammering iOS but I rather be in Apples position and make the huge profits, Android and it's phone manufacturers can keep the sales.

Android and the upcoming Windows 8 are more in direct competition as they rely on other manufacturers to build their phones. Would manufacturers prefer to pay MS to use their OS or put more resources in opensource Android?

Yep. Plus the new one is coming. Sales also slowed down when Iphone 4 was to be announced and thus 3GS sales slowed down. Oh well. I don't have stocks in either company. Wish i did but now they are too expensive to even buy in.

I expect Apple's market share will continue to decline for some time ...

Apple produces high end hardware and sells it at a premium which gives them healthy margins but limits the size of their market. In developed nations where people can afford their product, smart phones mostly do what everyone wants them to so it is difficult to create new features that can justify the purchase of a premium product; and in developing nations less expensive phones are far more viable.

This isn't to say that Apple is in trouble, but they primarily sell based on the fashion of owning an Apple product; and that can not grow forever.

It should continue to hold at the 20% level for quite some time, because I don't think their legions of fans will drop iOS as long as they can sustain purchasing their products. However, at some point, you're going to look at a 70-20-10% split of market share between Android, iOS and other systems.

If Google can address and fix fragmentation in the next 2 years to put developer support fully behind their system, it'll damage Apple's last bastion of superiority - the app store.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Microsoft is picking up... i give it two years to be above IoS and close in to Android.

They just need 50euro phones now like Android.

It's because iPhone 5 launch is coming up in... probably September

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

Hmm...Maybe they should not worry about the Console Market as much and worry more about the mobile market. You cannot be the king forever. People learn from what you and they have done. Samsung base their company off of that. Improve on what others have done.

I think that the first thing that Apple should do it dump AT+T. That company is living in the past. People only deal with them because they want an iphone. But they would really like more options I think.

After having all of them in the past, ATT is the best currently. That said I don't really care for them as a company. The network is good and fast, you can use your phone as a hotspot and still use it as a phone at the same time. Sprint has horrible service, 3G is slow and 4G is almost non existant. When you do get 4G though it is really fast. Verizon has great service and speed is good, you just cant surf and talk at the same time. Now that ATT is taking what Verizon started in terms of sharing data, the plan price will go down for me as well.

Problem is iphone has become 'common' so many have one it doesnt have the same appeal anymore, so people turn to function over style, hence android.

Nice.. Lumia improvement.

Yay!!!

RIM will drop quite rapidly soon as they are withdrawing from the public, and its going back to business/private use again

It shows a possible harder time in the future for Apple, but the title is overblown, being hammered has nothing to do with it at this point at all not only in terms of marketshare but Apple being "hammered" is even more untrue in terms of revenue and profits generated from mobile operations bc they bring in multiple times the amount of profit that android brings in. Indeed, that is kind of the value of android for consumers, that it is a very very lean business model, but perhaps they can start to monentize android better as other competitors die off and the mobile market is not as crowded as it is now.
