Forums - Gaming - Smartphone Wars: Q2 Results In - Apple Gets Hammered by Android

Incredible, apple has just 20% of the mobile phone market share, yet they still grow richer day after day. Apple still does well though, but the budget Android phones are hits across the world. Most in the developing world can't afford an iphone. Plus this will change, in Q3 with the new iphone.

I am quite suprised at how bad Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry do. and WTF is bada?

Around the Network

Android marketshare is meaningless because it doesn't enjoy all the network effects that marketshare usually brings.

The Android brand is weak (stifled under carrier and OEM brands), the user experience is fractured between several custom UIs, hardware/software compatibility is unreliable, it's a distant second software platform, accessories and peripherals are scarce, and the overabundance of Android models means few of those models get to enjoy economies of scale.

Every single advantage that normally goes to the marketshare leader is going to Apple in the mobile market, and that's why Apple can profit like a monopolist with a relatively small share. Android is a fascinating example of the failure of "marketshare at any price" thinking.
