Forums - Sony - Wal-Mart will only sell Blu-Ray players in store according to CNN.

I don't think a lot of people will pay the 900$ premium for a 64GB SSD drive yet... Sure in the future it will become less expensive, but HDD is far from dead. As is the DVD.

HDDVD isn't dead but even if it died now, I'm not quite sure BR will take much market share from DVD. I do think that nothing will replace the DVD for the next 5 years at least.

Yeah it's the end who would now buy an HD-DVD player?

Eh I would (if I didnt have two already) as Wal-Mart aint the only store in the world and irrespective of the fact blu-ray has won, HD-DVD players make for cheap but amazingly good quality upscaling DVDs, are much better featured than current blu-ray players (even though much cheaper), and there are of tons of movies already out on HD DVD which wont suddenly stop working cause blu-ray has virtually killed blu ray off.

This post is funny; the bolded section is my favorite part.

I doubt it. First, it would have been plastered all over the news, like when Blockbuster and Target sided with Blu. Plus, there's no stories - 10 days later - stating this. Lastly, Wal-Mart was the first place to kick off the $99 HD DVD player deals. They are purple - they are in it for the benjamins.

yeah, HD DVD is dead. The real question now is can blu ray capture the attention of the main stream.

without HD-DVD they can focus on having some movies only available on Blu-ray or release the Blu-ray versions before the DVD or advertise a ton. Or all of the above.

Corporate Suicide 101.

No way will studios cut off their arm to save a finger. They may like the idea of Blu-ray but they're not going to forfeit the massive profits from DVD sales to force people into an upgrade.

They can release early, IMO. That won't do anything to DVD sales. Also, I dont think DVD will last more than 2 more years, as every DVD will come packed with a Blu-Ray advertisement. This all really depends on HDTVs. The faster those are bought, the faster Blu-Ray takes over DVD's domain.  That also prolongs digital downloads, as I dont see that taking over for atleast 10 years.

HA! You know there's still VHS players around in places like Best Buy right?  DVD has AT LEAST 5 to 10 more years lifespan.

What are you looking at, nerd?

You're joking, right? DVD, with all its might and historic adoption rate, took seven years to meet VHS sales.

Yet you think that it won't last for more than two years? Wishful thinking.

DVD will still be around and will still be selling by the boatload ten years from now.

The studios right now would prefer you to buy the standard DVD on new movies as their margins are MUCH higher.

Where the studio are hoping for a windfall is in their catalog titles. They are hoping everyone that goes HD will rebuy all of their old movies in HD. So there is no way a studio would release a movie on HD before DVD, just won't happen.

It will only be the right decision
