without HD-DVD they can focus on having some movies only available on Blu-ray or release the Blu-ray versions before the DVD or advertise a ton. Or all of the above.

No way will studios cut off their arm to save a finger. They may like the idea of Blu-ray but they're not going to forfeit the massive profits from DVD sales to force people into an upgrade. 


They can release early, IMO. That won't do anything to DVD sales. Also, I dont think DVD will last more than 2 more years, as every DVD will come packed with a Blu-Ray advertisement. This all really depends on HDTVs. The faster those are bought, the faster Blu-Ray takes over DVD's domain.  That also prolongs digital downloads, as I dont see that taking over for atleast 10 years.
