Forums - Sony - Sony rules out Vita price cut in 2012; says "it's too early"

Asked if Sony will drop the handheld's price this year, Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer: "No. It's too early."

He went on to say that Sony is working toward reducing Vita's price further down the line.

"Of course, cost reduction is one area our engineering team is working on. But we just launched the platform earlier this year. It takes time to do so.

"At a certain point in the future we would like to address the pricing issue for some of the people who are waiting. But this year we are trying to add value by creating different types of bundles. We announced we will provide LittleBigPlanet Vita bundle pack. That's affordable for people who are looking for a good deal."

Alongside Vita's price, Yoshida says a lack of content is to blame for the system's lacklustre start.

But, hey! They didn't say anything about those memory cards!

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

I'm not either, but I think some people thought that because the new bundles are coming out for the same price, the Vita itself will drop in price.

There are plenty of offers out there for those who want one. I got mine with Uncharted (a game I was planning to get anyway) for €249, so I saved €50.

If you want a Vita this holiday season, it's almost guaranteed that you will want it with some of the top tier games like LBP, AC, CoD, PSASBR... and all those games are gonna be bundled, so it's basically a €50 cut for 99% of potential buyers.

When you see how much dropping the price of the 3DS cost Nintendo, I don't blame them. Nintendo had cash to burn to establish the 3DS, I'm not so sure Sony's gaming division does.

it might pick up on holidays

I don't see why they would either. Get the games out there, bundle them, see how many people bite. Try and establish the console that way. When it comes to next year, see if production costs have dropped and lob some price off where applicable. Again, just because the 3DS slashed its price within 6 months doesn't mean Vita has to.

Like Troll_Whisperer said, the bundles are effectively price cuts in all honesty. You're paying the same price for Vita + A game as you would be for a Vita on its own. So just find a bundle with a game you were going to buy anyway and you've saved money.

perhaps another coffin nail for vita. hopefully not, don't let bigN dominate portable consoles.

Indeed, I was one of those who thought for sure it would get a reduction.

Hopefully the bundles and added value help it this holiday season. That and of course maybe a real marketing push.
