Have you ever watched a cartoon or animated movie and found very strong themes in them? I am not talking about typical adult oriented animations (Adult Swim, Family Guy, American Dad, etc). I am speaking more of the ones that at first glance you would completely think they were for children but upon further inspection they have themes that could only speak meaning to an adult. Subliminal Messaging maybe? I've heard that some Conservatives believe typical tv programing for children is mostly aimed at steering them to being leftist tree huggers. I am not sure of that notion but there are definite hidden/or not so hidden messages in some of it.
I will name a few of the ones I've noticed. Beware, SPOILERS GALORE!!!!!
-Up (Pixar, 2009)
Themes: Life's many dissappointments and how we cope with them.
This movie really spoke to me. I know I could not be the only fully grown adult who has seen this and was perturbed deeply in the first 20 mins or so. I saw this with my roommate after class, we were just BSing when we chose it. When in the first part of the movie they take you through the main character's entire life. The ups, the downs, the really sad parts, the sensitive moments. It just hits you like a ton of bricks. I am stunned thinking "I'm sorry, I thought I was in a kids movie....did that lady just have a miscarriage, lose her life's saving for her dream, and then become terminally ill?". The writers of this movie were total sadists and had me AND my roommate(hardened men mind you) crying in a pulic theatre. How could a child have understood the magnitude of all of this????? Kids in there with us were cnfused to why their parents were crying.
-Shark Tales
Theme: Euphemisms for Sexuality and Acceptance
Ok, I guess depending on your beliefs you could call this one blatent propaganda. How is this movie NOT a gay tale sugar coated for kids??? The Shark is so "different" and seen as not "shark" like(which in this case is another word for masculinity). So the shark is a vegetarian or something, his father disowns him(sound familiar) and it becomes a journey of acceptance. I personally thought the plot was a bit weak over all, but I was quick to recognize the underlying theme.
Wall-E
Theme: Human's Consumerist Mentality and Wasteful Nature
Very cute movie. Loved how there was barely any talking for like the first hour of this great film. Yet, did anyone else notice this glaring theme? With all the fat people and earth eing covered in trash and all I think it is fairly obvious. And to be honest this is a good story for children to see specifically because of that but......the entire concept is hidden behind what is actually the MAIN plot, WallE trying to save EvE. Most children never catch on to what is really going on here. Maybe this is the subliminal messaging I spoke of earlier.
Pokemon:Mew Two Strikes Back
Theme:Slavery, Civil Rights, Retribution/Vengeance, and Excesive Behavior.
All Ash and Co(and the entirety of the planet mind you) wanna do is catch some damn pokemon. Unfortunately for the small cute creatures this frequently means against their will. And to top it off they have made it into a sport of sorts. These are not really MONSTERS but intelligent Alien life forms that the humans have completely enslaved for their amusement. Thank GOD it backfired and the human's vanity cursed them with the awesome sauce that is MEWTWO!!!! I was young when I first saw this and never got it....now I am older and I am like WTF! THEY WERE SLAVES!!!! And MewTwo was basically Harriet Tubman/Nat Turner mixed with Hitler's sense of Retribution/Vengeance.
Oscar(Sesame Street)
Theme; That it is ok to sit idle and do nothing when there are people suffering right in front of you.
The guy lives in a fucking trash can.....yet all they ever do is bother him, call him a grouch for being snappy, but never help him from his predicament. Something is really wrong here.
End Spoilers!!!!!
I am going to post some other good ones later. Tell me of any you have noticed. Discuss.
