I worked for Gamestop for 3 years, and in that time I can testify to their abhorent practices in customer service, as well as for their employees.
-When I first was hired I was told of many advancement opportunities and how I would be treated as a valued employee. As time went on it was anything but.
-In the first 2 years I worked there, I did not receive a single raise even though I scored a 4/5-5/5 each time. It was due to minimum wage increase(less than 20 cents) that they felt they did not need to give me my designated amounts.
-We were told that in order to retain our job we would need to bring in numbers. These were based on how many GStop Cards you convinced people to move, and reservations of games. They demanded some of the most hostile practices towards customers. We were even told to lie.
-Anytime a customer comes through the door, within 3 seconds you need to ask them whether they have any trades/want to make a res/ etc. We are told if the desk is manned by someone else, the other workers are to follow customers around and badger them of their wants and needs.
-We were encouraged to sell CERTAIN games over others, regardless of actual quality. The games that we advertised on posters the most was meant to e pushed. Encouraged to say, do anything to get them to reserve it. The most frequent lie is that if you dont reserve the game there won't be any copies left even though on most AAA titles we usually get enough to last us a month. It is actually the niche titles ppl should reserve because stores will get very few copies.
-Many people employed at Gamestop have NO idea what they are selling, no gaming background what so ever.
-Many stores have a console bias of one or another. It usually stems from the managers and they hire only those who hold the same alliegence which actually was a cause for me almost getting fired on several occassions. My Manager at the time was a certified Microsoft Rep and he would get pissed off if I ever pitched a PS3 vers of a game. He would also blatently lie about many games to discredit PS3 titles, very petty.
-This manager was a total prick(mind you I had seen more than a dozen different teir managers by the first year). He had a strong dislike for me because I would speak my mind and would correct him on things. He cut my hours to basically nothing for almost 2 months, putting me in debt with bills. Thank god he was re-assigned, yet even on his way out he tried to convince the nxt guy to fire me. Luckily the guy gave me another chance and then praised me for putting up with the last guy, as I was THE best employee in the store.
-Used games are all you are suppose to care about, developer profits be damned. And yes, it is true many employees "check out" the games when they first release, using brand new copies that will be resold as new.
-And the most under-handed thing to happen to me there. I was in the middle of being trained as a 3rd Key Manager in my 3rd year, but then 2weeks before they informed me of my store's closing. Which gave me no time to find an alternate job. I got a choice of a weak severance package or being relocated to another store which was already over staffed(no hours available).
